STORY TIME

I Aims:

1 Knowledge: To consolidate the sound of the letters Ee, Ff, Gg, Hh and the

corresponding words

Learn and practice reading skills

Vocabulary : Revision

egg, elf, elephant, elbow

fox, fish, frog, fork

glass, goat, garden, gorrila

hat, hen, hippo, horse

2 Skills: Reading, Listening, Speaking, Writing

3.Attitude: Recognize and pronounce the letter H and its sound

(Requirements: students with disability can see and practise )

II Teaching aids

Teacher’s:i-Learn My Phonics Grade 1 , lesson plan, CD Phonics cards

Students’: Pupil’s Book –p.9 i-Learn My Phonics Grade 1,

Activity book – p.36

Bingo game

Prepare some bingo cards with the words in unit 5-8 and hand them out to the

students

Activity 1

Revision & Practice

1.Listen Read along (Track 86) (10

mins)

(book closed) Tell the students that it’s

story time

Ask them if they like reading stories and

what their favourite storybook character

is

Prepare phonics cards of these word:

hippo, elf, garden, fish and frog

Ask the students to read out the words

Invite students to guess what they think

the story is about

Ask the students to open and look at the

book

Ask them questions about what they can

see in the pictures

E.g: Teacher: (pointing to the elf in

picture 1) Look! What’s this?

Class: (It’s an) elf!

Teacher: (pointing to the hat in

picture 1) A happy hippo with a ….

Class: hat! etc

Play the CD and ask the students to listen

and follow the story in their books,

pointing to the pictures of the key words

Play the CD again pausing for the students

to repeat

Ask individual students to read the story

aloud

Extension (optional) ( 5 minutes)

Ask students to close their book

Read out a few sentences from the story

and ask the students to complete them

e.g Teacher: look at my…

Class: garden! etc

2.What is in the hippo’s garden? Draw

lines (5 mins)

Explain the activity

Ask the students to draw lines from the

items to the hipp’s garden

Ask individuals to name the items

Activity 1: Act Out (3 mins)

Read the sentences in the story, pause at

the key words

Invite the students to mime them (the

hippo, the elf, the garden, the fish, the

frog).

Have the students come to the front of the

classroom and act out the story

Encourage them to have fun as they

perform

Activity2: Drawing (3 minutes)

 Students choose their favourite animals or

objects from the story, then draw and

decorate it following their hobbies

The students circle the letters or the sound

in each picture

say out the letters, the sounds and the

pictures

Requirements: students with disability can

see and practise

Activity 2

.Use the code and colour the pictures (5

Explain the activity

Ask the students to name the items

The students use the code to colour each

item according to its initial sound

Go around the classroom providing

necessary help

Activity 3

Says the words Cross the odd one out

Explain the activity

Have students say the names of the items

Play the CD

The students listen and tick () yes or no

Answer key: 1_yes 2_no (goat) 3_yes

Activity: Draw the pictures (7 mins)

Divide class into two teams

The teams take it turn to send a student to

the board

As they come forward, give them a

phonics card from the words they have

learnt

Students try to illustrate it by drawing the

pictures so that their team can identify

If their team recognizes the word, they get

1 point

The team with the most points wins

4.Listen and tick () (Track 87)

Activity: Draw the pictures (7 mins)
