LESSON PLAN UNIT 13: HOBBIES Reading period

1 Class description:

46 grade 11 students, 16 boys and 30 girls at Xuan Dinh high school, Tu Liem, Ha Noi

2 Time: 45’

3 Objective:

By the end of the lesson, students will be able to:

- guess the meaning of new words based on clues in the text

- identify the main ideas of the text

- know more words and phrases related to hobbies

4 Anticipated problems:

- Students may find difficult in guessing the meanings of new words and identifying the main ideas; so the teacher (T) should be ready to provide them

5 Teaching aids: Textbook, posters, blackboard

6 Procedure

Warm-up

5’ * Playing game: Crossword, name the pictures

- Key word: 7 letters

- T explains the rule of the game:

* Rule:

- T has 6 pictures numbered from 1 to 6 on the board Students’ task is naming the action in the pictures and guessing the key word

- T divides the class into 4 groups The leader

of each group will have right to choose the number of the picture Which group has right answer will receive 1 point With each picture opened, they will have 1 letter in the key word

- Whole class

- Ss listen to the teacher

- Ss look at and name the pictures

* Activity 1:

- T raises the question: “Which do you like to

do in your free time?”

- T asks Ss to discuss in pairs

- T leads in the text ( “You are going to read a passage about a person’s bobbies Then do the tasks follow.”)

- T supplies some new words:

1 Guitarist /gi’ta:rist/ (n): a person who plays the

guitar (elicit by using picture)

2 ‘Regularly (adv): thường xuyên, đều đặn ( elicit

by using synonyms: regularly = often, usually)

3 Admire / əd’maiə(r)/ (v): khâm phục (elicit by

using picture and example)

4 Glass fish tank: bể cá bằng thủy tinh (elicit by

using picture)

5 Common / ‘komən/ (adj): thường, phổ biến (elicit

by using synonym: common = popular)

- T reads new words and asks Ss to repeat

(focus on stress)

- T asks Ss to number the lines in the text

* Task 1: Guessing skill

- T checks the answer and asks Ss to explain their answer ( Which information do they find

in the text)
