Possessive ‘s
Whose cat is

Trang 16To know how to use possessive case
To enrich a set of vocabulary about family
To develop skills through language activities
Trang 17The possessive case
- We normally use ‘s and s’ for people and some living creatures + Personal names: Jone’s car
+ Personal nouns: the doctor’s blouse
+ Indefinite pronouns: anyone’s guest
+ Collective nouns: the army’s advance, the committee’s decision+ Higher animals: the horse’s stable
+ Some lower animals: an ant’s net, a bee’s sting
The possessive appears before the noun it refers to However, it can
be used without a noun as well
Ex: I will go in Frank’s car and you can go in Alan’s
Trang 18- Add ‘s to singular nouns and to names not ending in –s
Ex: a child’s dream; John’s new job
If two names are joined by and, add ‘s to the second
Ex: John and Mary’s house
- Add ‘s to singular nouns ending in –s
Ex: an actress’s
- Add ‘s to irregular plural nouns
Ex: children’s game
- Add an apostrophe (‘) after the s of regular plurals
Ex: boys’ school
Trang 19- We don’t normally use ‘s with non-living things We use OF when referring to:
+ things: the shade of the tree
+ parts of things: the bottom of the box
+ abstract reference: the cost of living
- We can say : a man’s voice = the voice of a man
Trang 20Omission of the noun after ’s
and s’
- A noun that is implied: We need a ladder We can
borrow our neighbour’s
- Where someone lives: I stay at my aunt’s
- Shops and businesses: the butcher’s
