or deter u authoriz d entry into or remov al of the motor v ehicle
It is recog niz d that this stand ard cov er a relativ ely new area, not prev iously
stand ardiz d, and that it ma be neces ary to amend the req uirements resulting
fom initial ex erience of its use

3 Definitions
For the purposes ofthis Part of BS AU 20 , the

safety g lazing material or g las -plastic safety
g lazing material so constructed an instal ed in a
v ehicle in such a man er as to deter u authoriz d
entry into the v ehicle

safety g lazing material
a prod uct consisting of org anic and/or inorg anic
materials so constructed or treated to reduce in
comp rison with an ealed she t, plate or float g las ,
the lkel ho d of injury to per ons as a result of
contact with the safety glazing materials when used
in a v ehicle, whether they are broken or u broken
an for which special req uirements reg ard ing
v isibi ty , streng th and a rasion resistance are laid
d own
3.3
g las -plastics safety g lazing m aterial
a prod uct consisting of g lazing material which
comprises one or more lay er of g las and one or
more lay er of plastic in which a plastic sur ace of
the product faces inwards towards the p s eng er
comp rtment when instaled into the v ehicle
4 Security g la zing a nd resistance to
rem oval by im pact

4.1 W hen tested in ac ord nce withAnnex B, the
instal ed security g lazing sur ou ding the
p s eng er comp rtment of the v ehicle shal conform
to the requirements of4.2 and4.3
4.2 There shal be no sep ration betwe n the
g lazing an the bod y a erture larg e enoug h to
permit the fe p s ag e of a sphere4 mm±2 mm
in diameter
4.3 It shal not be pos ible to p s a
sphere4 mm±2mm in diameter f e ly throug h
any tear or spl t which dev elops within the g lazing
materials
4.4 I any piece of instaled g lazing fai s to conform
to the requirements of4.2 or4.3, two further
sep rate, but identical pieces, shal be tested in
ac ord nce withAn ex B and both shal conform to
the requirements of4.2 and4.3

The safety prov isions of security g lazing are cov ered

req uirements for v ehicle g lazing and en anced
resistance to penetration of the g lazing when
subject to at ack f om outside the v ehicle

B.1 Apparatus
B.1.1 Genera l The a p ratus shal be ad justa le to
ena le a rang e of d oor or complete v ehicles to be
tested An a justa le rig id sup ort shal be used
Prov ision shal be ma e to interpose a rub er strip
of thick es 25mm and5 IRHD betwe n the d oor
or closure and the sup ort during the testing to
represent the d oor or closure seal, ad jacent to the
g lazing area ( se Fig ure B.1) The a p ratus shal
be as shown inFig ure B.1and shal be as d es ribed
inB.1.2 andB.1.3

cond itions:
a) temperature: 20°C ±5°C;
b) pres ure: 9 0 mb r ±10 mb r;
c) relativ e h midity : 6 % ±20 %
B.3 Proc dure
B.3.1 Car y out the test on each piece of suita ly
siz d external g lazing in the v ehicle ( se B.3.3)
W here the left hand side and the rig ht hand side of
the v ehicle are sy mmetricaly g laz d, it is only
neces ary to test one sid e
B.3.2 Position the pendulum in such a wa that, at
the point of imp ct, the hammer head is normal to
the sur ace of the g lazing
S bject each piece of g lazing to fiv e imp cts fom a
v ertical d rop heig ht of7 0mm±10mm with a
sing le imp ct at each point of the p t ern shown
inFig ure B.2c), the outer points of which form a
square of side7 mm±5mm, which has one
diag onal in the horiz ntal plane
Position the centre of the p t ern as folows:
a) for sy mmetrical g lazing : 15 mm±10mm
fom the top of the exterior v isible g lazing on the
v ertical plane of symmetry , as shown in
Fig ure B.2a);
