Hitherto, no stand rd has existed for the UnitedKing dom that defines the

perormance and use of eq uipment intended to prev ent or deter u authoriz d

entry into or remov al of a motor v ehicle

It is recog niz d that this stand ard cov er a relativ ely new area, not prev iously

stand ardiz d, and that it ma be neces ary to amend the req uirements resulting

fom the initial ex erience of its use

This Part of BSAU20 specifies req uirements for marking the g lazing fit ed to

v ehicles with their reg istration, or some other u iq ue number,with the intention

of making the re-reg istration or resale of stolen v ehicles more d ificult and

ex ensiv e The depth of marking has be n chosen to ensure that any reduction in

streng th ofthe g lazing material resulting f om the marking do s not ad v er ely

afect its in-serv ice per ormance

1 Scope

This Part of BSAU20 specifies req uirements for

the security marking of the g lazing fit ed to

p s eng er car and car deriv ed v ehicles

complance with national or international

requirements for safety g lazing materials

2 Definitions

For the purposes ofthis Part of BSAU20 the

fol owing d efinitions a ply

2.1

se urity m arking

a mark a pl ed to the g lazing in a v ehicle using a

control ed eng rav ing sy stem which prov ides a

means of identify ing that v ehicle and which cannot

be easiy remov ed b g rinding or polshing

2.2

eng ra ing system

a sy stem of marking into the g las sur ace using

either a phy sical or chemical method

2.3

da l g ht o ening

that p rt of the g laz d area in a v ehicle which is not

obs ured b the v ehicle body work, trim or printed

obs uration b n when the g lazing is in the closed

position

3 Security ma rking

3.1 Se urity m ark

Each piece of external safety g lazing material shal

be marked with a security mark which shal be

either:

a) the v ehicle reg istration n mber; or

b) some other u iq ue n mber

3.2 Size of m arking

Character used for marking shal be7.5±2.5mm

in heig ht

3.3 Leg ibi ity

Marking shal be leg ible fom outside the v ehicle at

a d istance of1 m u d er normal d y lig ht v iewing

conditions

3.4 Depth of m arking

3.4.1 W here the marking is phy sical y eng rav ed into

the outer or in er g lazing surace the depth of

marking shal be:

0.01mm minimum

0.0 mm ma imum

3.4.2 The d epth of marking shal be measured using

a g aug e with a sty lus which has a tip ra ius not

exce ding0.25mm

3.4.3 W here chemical etching is used, the depth of

marking shal be either:

a) as specified in3.4.1; or

b) les than0.01mm prov id ed it is eng rav ed into

the insid e of the g lazing

3.5 Position of m arking

3.5.1 For sy stems comply ing with3.4.1, the

marking on opening g lazing shal be positioned

within3 mm of the bot om of the d ay lig ht opening

and be leg ible f om outside the v ehicle On fixed

g lazing , the marking shal be positioned

within3 mm of the bot om or top of the d ay lig ht

opening

3.5.2 For sy stems comply ing with3.4.3, the marks

shal be positioned within an area which is3 mm

f om the lower ed g e of the d ay lig ht opening

and7 mm f om its a joining sid e, and shal be

leg ible in ac ord nce with3.3
