1 Scope and field ofappl cation

This International Stand rd specifies the

requirements for the location an marking of the

v ehicle identification n mber ( VIN) on motor

v ehicles, trai er , motor y cles an mopeds as

defined in ISO3 3

4 VIN location

4.1 The VIN shal be located on the rig ht side of the

v ehicle and , if pos ible, on the font half; or

4.2 W hen, for reg ulatory reasons, the V IN must be

read able fom the outsid e of the v ehicle ( in the case

of enclosed v ehicles), it shal be located inside the

p s eng er comp rtment a jacent to the winds re n

pi lar

4.3 The VIN shal be located in an easiy v isible

position, and in a man er which precludes

oblteration or alteration; the selected position shal

be d es ribed in the “ Owner’s hand bo k” or

eq uiv alent publcation

5 VIN at achment

For the at achment of the VIN,the man facturer of

the v ehicle ma cho se betwe n the fol owing two

solutions:

5.1 The V IN is d irectly marked

on a integ ral p rt

of the v ehicle; it ma be either on the fame, or, for

integ ral f ame-bod y units, on a p rt of the bod not

easiy remov ed or replaced

5.2 The VIN is marked on a sep r ate plate which, in

turn, is permanently afixed to the v ehicle ac ording

to5.1

5.3 It is also ac epta le to combine these

alternativ es on one v ehicle if a man facturer so

wishes

5.4 The heig ht of roman let er and ara ic numerals

of the VIN shal be as folows:

— 7mm at least if marked ac ording to5.1

( frame, body , etc.) on motor v ehicles an traier

( but not on motor y cles and moped s);

— 4mm at least in al other cases

5.5 The character of the VIN shal, in al cases, be

leg ible, dura le and not easi y altered
