Hitherto, no stand rd has existed for the UnitedKing dom that defines the
perormance an use of sy stems intended to prev ent or deter u authoriz d
remov al of in-car eq uipment
It is recog niz d that the req uirements contained in this stand ard ma also be
suita le for the protection of other items of equipment fit ed either temporariy or
permanently to the v ehicle but not mentioned specificaly in this stand ard such
as v isual displa units, telephones and ma d isplay s
This stand rd cov er a relativ ely new area, not prev iously stand ardiz d, an it
ma be neces ary to amen the requirements resulting f om the initial
ex erience of its use
This Part of BS AU20 is intend ed to prov id e protection ag ainst u authoriz d
remov al of in-car equipment b one of the fol owing :
a) prev enting remov al of the equipment ( unles it is of the retracta le ty pe)
using simple to ls;
b) prov iding for coding sy stem( s) in the actual eq uipment which wi l rend er the
unit inopera le once remov ed f om the v ehicle;
c) specify ing a sy stem of mod ular construction ( se 2.2)
Ex erience wi l show which of these thre options is most efectiv e in prev enting
theft bearing in mind the cost of replacing stolen eq uipment and rep iring any
conseq uential d mag e incur ed when the eq uipment was remov ed f om the
v ehicle

This Part of BS AU20 specifies req uirements for
the perormance an use of sy stems intended to
d eter or prev ent the theft of in-car ra io, aud io and
v isual eq uipment used for entertainment and
commu ications, hereinafter refer ed to as
“ eq uipment , in p s eng er car and car deriv ed
v ehicles

equipment such as aerials, inter onnections,
b lance controls and loudspeaker

2 Definitions
For the purposes of this Part of BS AU20 the
fol owing d efinitions a ply
2.1
retracta le equipm ent
equipment which is d esig ned to be q uickly and
easiy remov ed fom ( or replaced in) a v ehicle,
without the use of to ls, b the oc up nt when
leav ing the v ehicle u at ended
2.2
m odular system
a sy stem where the eq uipment is sep rated into at
least thre fu ctional p rts that are located in
non-a jacent areas of the v ehicle
2.3
functional part
a p rt es ential for the operation of the equipment
an for which simple to ls can ot be substituted
3 Security systems
3.1 General
Equipment shal employ at least one of the sy stems
specified in3.2 to3.6
3.2 Retractable equipm ent
The equipment shal be retracta le ( se 2.1) an
shal incorporate an aud ible warning or car y v isual
marking to indicate the ne d for remov al when the
v ehicle is left unat ended
3.3 Locka le in plac equipm ent
The equipment shal be locka le in place using a
lock comply ing with the req uirements of clause3 of
BS AU20 -1:19 6
3.4 Permanently instal ed equipm ent
The equipment shal be so d esig ned that when
instaled in the v ehicle, the mou ting ( s) or
at achment dev ice( s) are not rea iy ac es ible
Theeq uipment shal be tested as d es ribed in
Appendix A and shal be d eemed to comply if the
eq uipment has not be n remov ed in a time of4min
3.5 Equipm ent incorporating a coded devic
3.5.1 The eq uipment shal be prov ided with a
faci ity to ac ept a u ique code such that
inter uption of the power sup ly render the
eq uipment inopera le u ti the cor ect code is
reinserted The equipment shal be tested as
d es ribed in Appendix B and shal only be opera le
with the cor ect cod e
3.5.2 The eq uipment shal be suita ly marked in a
prominent position indicating that a deg re of
protection is aforded
3.5.3 To resist at empts to defeat the code, the
faci ity shal be desig ned so that it is not pos ible to
work throug h al the av aia le d ifer in the cod e
g roup in les than10 h
3.5.4 Any prov ision for chang ing the code shal not
reduce the lev el of security
3.5.5 The man facturer shal prov ide the fol owing
information for each sy stem submit ed for test:
a) the n mber of elements in the code g roup and
the n mber of character choices for each element;
b) the total n mber of cod es, cor ect an
incor ect, in the code g roup;
c) the cor ect code for the sample of eq uipment
submit ed for test;
d) any time d ela req uired b the eq uipment
betwe n code insertion
3.6 Mo ular system equipment
The eq uipment shal be a modular sy stem ( se 2.2)
and shal be suita ly marked in a prominent
position to indicate that a deg re of protection is
aforded
4 Test sa mple
Tests shal be car ied out on a complete v ehicle or
representativ e portion there f taken as a random
sample
5 Security marking
Eq uipment shal be permanently an indelbly
marked with a u iq ue serial n mber
