Trang 50 Introduction
This International Stand ard des ribes a method for
measuring d imensional chang es of dis brake p ds
u der the influence of heat At the same time, it
g iv es an indication of the resistance of whole dis
brake p d s to heat trans er in the direction of
a pl ed pres ures Accord ing to the desig n of the
test rig , either one or two dis brake p d s are
required for testing An ex tension of this
International Stand ard for d rum brake l ning s has
sti to be prep red
Dimensional chang es and the temperatures
recorded in ac ord nce with this test method in the
z ne of contact of the operating for es are measured
on dis brake p d s whose rub ing surace is pres ed
ag ainst a heated plate subjected to a g iv en
temperature-time prog ramme
1 Scope and field ofappl cation
This International Stand ard specifies a combined
method of measuring d is brake p ds to determine
their dimensional chang es in relation to
temperature and their resistance to heat trans er
The dimensions concerned are:
— thick es d imension;
— certain dimensions of the l ning outlne when
their v ariation ma inv olv e a mis u ctioning of
the brake
This International Stand rd a ples to dis brake
p d s for roa v ehicles Their dimensions should not
exce d8 mm in depth, 1 0mm in wid th
and20mm in thick es , being of integ ral moulded
or bonded ty pe, and the b cking plate of sol d ty pe

5 Test rig
5.1 The test rig is composed of a rig id, electricaly
heated ste l plate, 8 mm hig h, 17 mm wid e
and4 mm thick, with d ev ices for clamping the
brake p d and for the measuring eq uipment
The test rig ma be desig ned for two brake p d s
As an ex mple, Fig ure 2 shows a test rig , which
me ts the req uirements
The rig consists of ( se Fig ure 2):
a) a clamping block( 1) prov ided with a piston
of4 mm d iameter moving easi y in the block;
b) v arious coi spring s ( 2) ensuring b deflection
d) a dial g aug e( 4) measuring displacement f om

5.2 Heating ca acity
The heating sour e shal be ca a le of bring ing the
plate to a temperature of4 0°C in10±0,5min.In
certain cases, especialy with a v iew to uti zation of
tested brake lning s on a g iv en v ehicle ty pe, it ma
be neces ary to a opt a plate temperature

5.3 Measuring equipm ent
Temperature is measured centraly in the heating
plate b means of a sheathed thermocouple in a hole
ru ning p ralel to, and5mm fom, the contact

In the case of d is brake p ds eq uip ed with
anti noise strips, a4mm thick8 ×10 mm
thermal cond uctiv e plate is placed betwe n the p d
and the clamping dev ice for the measurement of
heat trans er The temperature measurement on
this plate is taken b means of a sheathed
thermocouple which is situated in a hole dri led to
the centre of the plate ( se Fig ure 2) The block for
clamping the dis brake p d is prov id ed with a
d ev ice ca a le of a ply ing a for e rang e of20
to20 N Fixed on the same side the displacement
measuring dev ices shal measure the displacement
fom the p d b cking plate or intermediate plate
6 Test method

clamping block, with the rub ing surace towards
the heater plate, an clamped with a p d surace

heating and co lng period
I the measurements are not taken b means of a
record er, these shal be read at25°C interv als of

After the final temperature has be n reached , the
heat sour e is switched of, and the co lng period
