A THE PAST SIMPLE TENSE

( Thì quá khứ đơn )

I Formation : Thì quá khứ đơn được thành lập theo hình thức sau :

 Tobe : was / were

Ex : She was very tired

They were very happy

 Ordinary verbs : ( + )

S + V-ed / V2

Ex : They wanted to see a movie.

She came here yesterday.

( - )

S + did not + V ( bare – infinitive )

- did not = didn’t

Ex : They didn’t want to see a movie.

She didn’t come here yesterday.

( ? )

Did + S + V ( bare – infinitive ) ?

Ex : Did they want to see a movie ? Did she come here yesterday.

II Uses : Thì quá khứ đơn dùng để :

1.Chỉ một hành động đã xảy ra và chấm dứt tại một thời điểm xác định trong quá khứ ( Thường dùng với các trạng từ chỉ thời gian như : yesterday, ago, last week / month / year …, in / on + past time )

Ex : He visited Hue in 2002

2.Chỉ một chuỗi các hành động xảy ra trong quá khứ.

Ex : After he arrived in Hue, he visited his grandparents, saw some friends and went sightseeing around Hue

3.Chỉ một sự việc xảy ra suốt một khoảng thời gian trong quá khứ và đã chấm dứt

Ex : His father worked in a factory for 10 years.

III Exercise : Put the verbs in parentheses in the past simple tense

B WISH SENTENCE

( Câu ước muốn )

I Form :

 Ước muốn ở hiện tại :

S + wish + S + V ( past subjunctive )

* Past subjunctive : Quá khứ bàn thái → Dùng giống quá khứ đơn, riêng “tobe” dùng “were” cho tất cả các ngôi

Ex : I wish Hoa were here

I wish I knew her telephone number

I wish he didn’t tell you about that

 Ước muốn ở tương lai :

S + wish + S + would / could + V( bare – infinitive )

Ex : I wish Hoa could come tomorrow

I wish he would tell me about that

I wish he would answer my letter

II Use :

Dùng để diễn tả những ước muốn tưởng tượng không có thật ( ở hiện tại hoặc

tương lai )

Ex : 1 I don’t know French ( tình huống có thật )

→ I wish I knew French.

2 I can’t speak Japanese ( tình huống có thật ) → I wish I could speak Japanese

3 My parents live in Ho Chi Minh City ( tình huống có thật ) → I wish my parents didn’t live in Ho Chi Minh City

4 She can’t come tomorrow ( tình huống có thật ) → I wish she could come tomorrow

5 My father won’t stop smoking ( tình huống có thật )

→ I wish my father would stop smoking.

6 They will leave for England next week ( tình huống có thật )

→ I wish they wouldn’t leave for England next week

7 She isn’t a famous singer

→ I wish she were a famous singer.

8 Mai doesn’t stay with me at the moment

→ I wish Mai stayed with me at the moment
