LESSON PLAN: LISTENING

Name of the lesson: UNIT 13: HOBBIES

Listening section

Teacher in charge: Nguyễn Minh Thiền

Time allotted: 45 minutes

Objectives: By the end of the lesson, students will be able to

• Use a strategy to do T/F statements

Skills: listening (main skill), speaking (sub skill)

Lexical items:

• Verbs: to get fed up with, to cope with

• Adjectives: ignorant, gigantic

Teaching aids: pictures, postures

PROCEDURE

I Warm-up (5 mins)

 T lets Ss play a game

 T divides class into 4 groups

T gives instruction: “I have a picture which is cut into 9 small

pieces I will let you see the original picture in 10 seconds After

10 seconds you will work in your group to arrange the pieces in order to make them like the original picture When you finish, 2 Ss

in each group will go to the BB and stick them on the BB The group completing the picture in the shortest time will be the winner.”

 T checks Ss’ understanding of the instruction

 Ss work in their groups to complete the task

 T checks the result

II Pre-listening

1 Brainstorming (5 mins)

 T asks Ss to work in pairs and have a small discussion on the

topic: “Some advantages of reading books”

 Ss’ duties are work in pairs and list as many advantages as possible

 After 3 minutes T calls some Ss to present their ideas.

 T comments and gives feedback

 Working arrangement: Ss work in pairs

2 Vocabulary teaching (7mins)

T uses some techniques to teach some vocabulary

 get fed up with (sth)  synonym = to be tired of (sth)

 gigantic (adj)  synonym = extremely large, very big

 ignorant (adj)

 To cope with (v)

III While-listening

1 Task 1: True/False statements (15 mins)

 T gives Ss 2 minutes to read statements in task 1 carefully and guess the answer

 Before letting Ss listen to the tape, T gives Ss a strategy to do this task

Read through the statements to understand them and underline the key words

Ex: 1 the writer started his hobby when he was young

Listen to the tape and pay attention to the key words Decide whether the statements are true or false based on what they can hear

 T lets Ss listen to the tape two or three times and choose the correct answer

 Before checking Ss’ answers, T ask Ss to compare their answers with their partners

 T calls some Ss to write their answers on the BB

 T let Ss listen again to check their answers

Answer key: 1 T; 2 F; 3 F; 4 F; 5 T; 6: T; 7: T; 8: F

Statement 2: His parents were not interested in reading fairy tales and other stories for him They were fed up with reading fairy tales and other stories for him

Statement 3: The writer started with ABC books

Statement 4: Now he reads just about anything that is available

Statement 8: Books certainly help him in his daily life

2 Task 2: gap-filling (5 mins)

 T asks Ss to give their answers before letting them listen to

the tape again to complete this task

 T plays the tape once or twice in order to check Ss’ answers

IV Post-listening (5 mins)

 T asks Ss to work in pairs and have a small discussion on the topic:

“Some disadvantages of reading books”

 Ss’ duties are work in pairs and list as many disadvantages as

possible

 After 3 minutes T calls some Ss to present their ideas

 T comments and gives feedback

 Working arrangement: Ss work in pairs

V Homework giving (2 mins)

 T asks Ss to prepare for the next class - Writing in page 151

Reserved activities

1 st activity: T asks Ss to retell speaker’s hobby by using the information that

I’ve got from the listening

2 nd activity: In the speaker’s opinion, what are the advantages of reading?
