LESSON PLAN: WRITING

Name of the lesson: UNIT 12: The Asian Games

Writing section

Teacher in charge: Nguyễn Minh Thiền

Time allotted: 45 minutes

Objectives: By the end of the lesson, students will be able to

• Know and use transition words that add information to write a paragraph Skills: writing (main skill), speaking (sub skill)

Lexical items:

• Verbs: to upgrade, to widen, to equip, to recruit

• Nouns: facilities

Teaching aids: pictures, postures

PROCEDURE

I Warm-up (5 mins)

 T divides class into groups of 4 Each group nominates one leader

 T delivers hand-outs and lets Ss play a game

T gives instruction: “In the hand-outs, there are 6 names of the city

and 6 flags Your duty is to match the cities with the correct flags When you finish, your leader will write your answers on the BB The group has all correct answers in the shortest time will be the winner.”

 T checks Ss’ understanding of the instruction

 Ss work in their groups to find the answers

 After Ss finish their work, T will check and give comments and feedback

 Working arrangement: Ss work in groups of 4

II Pre-writing

1 Vocabulary teaching (7mins)

 T uses some techniques to teach some vocabulary from the writing section

to upgrade (v)  explanation = to improve or enhance the quality or value of

to widen (v)  explanation = to make sth wide or wider

to equip (v)  translation

to recruit (v)  synonym = to employ facilities (n)  translation

 T says the words 2-3 times and asks them to repeat 2-3 times

 T checks vocabulary: technique: Rub out and remember

 Working arrangement: Ss work individually

2 Brainstorming (5 mins)

 T asks Ss to work in pairs and have a small discussion on the

topic: “Suppose Vietnam is going to host the coming Asian

Games What should we do to successfully host the Asian Games?”

 Ss’ duties are work in pairs and list as many things that Vietnam should do to successfully host the coming Asian Games as possible

 After 3 minutes T calls some Ss to present their ideas

 T comments and gives feedback

 Working arrangement: Ss work in pairs

3 Task 2 (6 mins)

 T asks Ss to work in pairs and discuss to provide reasons for the ideas they have just written on the BB

 After 3 minutes, T calls Ss to write their ideas on the BB

 T does the correction

III While writing

Task 1 (15 mins)

 T asks Ss to work individually to write a short paragraph of about 200 words to describe the preparations for the Games using the information in task 1 & 2

 Before Ss start working, T provides transition words that add information to connect ideas/information in task 1 and 2 to write a paragraph more easily

TRANSITIONS THAT ADD INFORMATION

First of all, next, then, after that, finally And, also, besides, along with Furthermore, moreover, in addition, last but not least

 T calls one S to write their paragraph on the BB

 When checking mistakes that the S have made, T reminds Ss of

a structure of a paragraph

STRUCTURE OF A PARAGRAPH Sentence 1: Topic sentence Sentence 2, 3, 4, …: supporting sentences Last sentence: concluding sentence

 T comments and gives feedback

IV Post-writing (5 mins)

 Ask Ss to change their paragraph and give peer correction

 Call some Ss read their paragraph

V Homework giving (2 mins)

 Ask Ss to prepare for the next class - Language Focus in page 144 Teacher’s comments
