1 Past progressive
a Form:
(+) S+ was/were + V-ing + O.
(-) S + was/were not + V-ing +O.
(?) Was/Were + S + V-ing +O?
b Use:
- Diễn tả một sự việc đang xảy ra tại một thời điểm xác định trong quá khứ
- Diễn tả một sự việc đang diễn ra ở quá khứ thì một sự việc quá khứ khác xen vào Trong câu thường có liên từ “when, while”
c Signal words: at that time, at (8 p.m) last night/ 2 days ago, between 8a.m and 9 a.m yesterday, from (6 a.m) to (8 a.m) last Sunday; when, while
*Ex:
- I was having dinner at 7 o’clock yesterday evening
- They weren’t playing soccer at that time
- Was Anna going shopping between 4 p.m and 7 p.m two days ago?
2 Past progressive with While and When
a While: dùng để diễn tả hai hành động xảy ra song song đồng thời tại cùng một thời
điểm
*Ex:
- We were having dinner while Mary was watching TV
- While I was studying, my brother was playing computer games
b When: được dùng khi diễn tả một hành động khác xảy ra trong một thời gian ngắn
thì hành động khác chen ngang ngay lập tức
*Ex:
- When it started to rain, I was doing my homework
- My aunt came when we were having lunch
