II.1 Component Overhaul process
II.1.1.Definition
(1) Overhaul
Objective: Overhaul is a process carried out in MRO, that is
to provide the necessary tasks required for certified RepairShop i.a.w Operator’s Regulatory Authority Rules andPractices, and to be Airworthy until the next mandated TimeBetween Overhaul (TBO) period (Messier-Dowty)
How to do: The process that ensures that the aircraft
component is in complete conformity with all applicable
services tolerances specified in the type certificate holder’s,
or equipment manufacture’s instruction for continued
airworthiness, or in the data which is approved or accepted
by authority The aircraft component will be at leastdisassemble, cleaned, inspected, repaired as necessary, reassembled and test in accordance with the above specifieddata (SAR-145.5)
(2) Repair
Repair is a process carried out in MRO, that is to restore a

II.2.1.Description
The Overhaul process in MRO is carried out on aircraft component,
to better understand this process, the information need to be knownfirstly might be:
Material, dimension, finish coatings as required by OEM at
every surface of part
Objective of overhaul process in MRO on each part or
component
Kinds of defect that need to be inspected and removed
within MRO
(1) Understanding on the part
i As stated in SOPM, in the drawing of part, the information
of material and the finish codes can be found, that will bedecoded by looking up in Practice Manual And in CMM, allfinish coatings are listed and indicated in figures to helpMRO build up the part, the information can be found in item
“Repair” or “Fit and Clearance“ in appropriate CMM ofcomponent

II.2.2.Basic Flowchart of Overhaul Process
(1) The flow chart below gives the basic steps that the part may gothrough to be given back to serviceable This is my understandingfrom basic repair procedure, that might be not enough to apply for allkind of part but easier to make understand
The flowchart below just brings some information that generally
explains how the part goes through workshop and the firstimagination about the job at each workshop or office
Nguyễn Đăng Tuyền – Lớp Cơ Khí Hàng Không – KSCLC K51 19
Trang 20Basic Flowchart of Overhaul Process
(Source: Training document)
Trang 21 By using Inspection of customer-owned equipment report,
the team will check Part number, serial number, modification and quantities of component in accordancewith the OHM/CMM/Receiving check list
Inspect physical part and documentation: to record all the
sign of damage, broken part, missing part, addition part etc
Photo taking
Receiver is routed together with the customer’s doc to
Commercial Dept
(2) Release of Customer Order
Once the component is received, Commercial Dept will issueCustomer Order Job Form The custom job form and the WorkRecord Sheers are routed to the appropriate Team Leader viaplanner
(3) Disassembly
Disassembly will be carried out in accordance with theOHM/CMM Disassembly section Thus, all the tool andequipment needed (fixture, etc) After this step, the componentwill be segregated to sub-assembly or part with the respectivenumber It is essential that all the bushings present must beremoved from the bores to allow a thorough inspection of thebase metal and to prevent damage during baking Next, organiccoating, primer, painting will be removed (practices standard:PCS -2700, SOPM 20-30-02)
(4) Part segregation
Nguyễn Đăng Tuyền – Lớp Cơ Khí Hàng Không – KSCLC K51 21
Trang 22Here, the part or sub-assembly will be assigned a job number, theprocess will be controlled by using these job number from now
to the end of process
The team will separate the scrapped items with the serviceable, then record scrapped items into the Scrap Log, and order thereplacement part through InfoFlo
(5) Stress relief
Stress relief is necessary to remove any residual stress built up inthe parts during its operations on the plane That is to prevent thepart from stress concentration after every process that mayintroduce the stress (e.g machining) The parts will be sent to theoven for stress relief This baking process is also known asannealing where a metal (in this case steel) is heated to a suitabletemperature and the temperature is held constant for a period oftime before being slowly cooled It is necessary that the parts arecooled slowly to prevent the build up of thermal stress which
Nguyễn Đăng Tuyền – Lớp Cơ Khí Hàng Không – KSCLC K51 22
Trang 23Đồ án tốt nghiệp – Thực tập tại công ty MSA Singapore
may occur when a large temperature gradient is induced in theparts due to rapid cooling
A second objective for this baking process is to soften the partswhen baked, thus increasing its ductility and reducing the risks
of damage during machining works that will occur later
The temperature will found in SOPM and may depend on kind ofmaterial Normally, the high strength steel is often baked in 4h at375°F/190°C, and material of Aluminium and Titanium have not
to bake
(6) Non-Destructive Testing
The step is mandatory in MRO The purpose of this job is toinspect the defect on or near the surface of part There are somekinds of defect: crack (open or close), heat damage
There are some NDT methods used to detect the respectivedefect:
Magnetic Particle Inspection (MPI) is to inspect
ferromagnetic parts only, for two kind of crack (closeand open)
Fluorescent Particle Inspection (FPI) is to inspect
ferromagnetic and non-ferromagnetic material also, butonly for detecting the open crack
The Nital Etch Test will also be carried out to inspect
for possible heat damage during in service operations
Eddy current: is to detect the discontinuities of material
It depends on OEM requirement that which method in thesemethods will be carried out for a purpose
(7) Product verification
This is a very importance job that will determine on what is
the next step for the part In this job, they will do the visualand dimensional inspection; it is to check the surfacecondition and all dimension specified per CMM The result
Nguyễn Đăng Tuyền – Lớp Cơ Khí Hàng Không – KSCLC K51 23
Trang 24Measuring the roughness of machined surface
of this will be found in a form “Inspection ConditionReport” (ICR) and will be used for further repair scheme
i In general, all information involving the condition of thepart from receiving to delivery is kept in the file,Component Condition Report
ii For Life limited part, this job will record the description, part No, serial No, record cycle (or time) since new (oroverhaul): time since new –TSN, TSO, CSN, CSO Thehistory of part will be traced against Back to birth List,Folio 12, and Part Movement Traceability Sheet (PMTS).iii Here, the delivery report is also generated for eachcomponent and send to customer That is to ensure propermaintenance of vital component information afteroverhaul and AD or SB modifications were carried out
(8) Rework (this will be in detail in the part of report on repairprocess)
Nguyễn Đăng Tuyền – Lớp Cơ Khí Hàng Không – KSCLC K51 24
Trang 25Đồ án tốt nghiệp – Thực tập tại công ty MSA Singapore
In this step, the defect found will be repaired per respectiverepair scheme, and the part will be returned to the designcondition or accepted as specified in other cases
(9) Bushing installation
Bushing is a lining of metal or similar material for a hole, to givethe protection from wear or to put replaceable material in thehole or larger part not as economically replaceable Bushing isrenewal part in overhaul process This process can be a part ofassembly, and is called pre-assembly The bushings, some kinds
of them are fabricated at machine shop of MSA, others areordered from outside, that depends on the availability ofmaterial
(10) Painting
This step will apply the relevant top coats for each position asspecified in CMM, the top coats may be: primer, enamel, corrosion preventive compound
of its importance
(13) Testing
Testing is also carried out in accordance with CMM, testing andassembly are taken care of by Quality Assurance Department, because double check is needed
Trang 26inspect the physical unit and will be documented The finding ofdiscrepancy must be rectified.

Alternative Tool
Đồ án tốt nghiệp – Thực tập tại công ty MSA Singapore
II.3 Tooling
II.3.1.Definition
(1) Tool and its functions
i Tool is the instruments or devices the technicians need in order to dotheir job In the Overhaul or repairing process, there are a lot of tasks, each task carried out on a part which requires a relevant set of tool that
is always listed in CMM The tool that can be a simple tool such as aspanner or a complicated system includes many kinds of device such as
a hydraulic supply unit or an electronic unit
ii Tool Classification
Nguyễn Đăng Tuyền – Lớp Cơ Khí Hàng Không – KSCLC K51 27
Trang 28Ring Nut Wrench - Part No: 460007137 - Function: Turn the ring nut
This classification based on how MRO receives tool:
• OEM tool (OEM-Original Equip Manufacturer)
(1) This kind of tool is designed and manufactured by the OEM(e.g Boeing or Airbus), and can only be used without anymodification
(2) To get this tool, The MRO that has a license for accessingOEM website, can download all the design, all the necessarydata is available, such as the operation manual
(3) MRO sometimes encounter some disadvantages of OEM toolbut MRO are not allowed to modify the OEM
• In-house tool
(1) This kind tool is designed by the MRO
Nguyễn Đăng Tuyền – Lớp Cơ Khí Hàng Không – KSCLC K51 28
Trang 29Component storage
Đồ án tốt nghiệp – Thực tập tại công ty MSA Singapore
(2) It is often used for enhancing and supporting for the job or makesthe work become easier, faster, safer or more economical
• Alternative tool
(1) The OEM tool is available to be used and is provided by the OEM.But some of alternative equivalent is permitted by OEM for theOEM tool So MRO can fabricate the equivalent tool that based onthe design recommended by OEM as long as they can prove thatthis tool has the same functions of OEM tool
(2) The name of OEM tool must be changed in accordance withregulation of OEM The name will have three parts, for example:B737NG / ABC / 0001, in which: B737 NG (stands for Boeing737New Generation) is the type of aircraft is applied, ABC is theequivalent OEM tool’s name, and finally 0001 is the index of this
Nguyễn Đăng Tuyền – Lớp Cơ Khí Hàng Không – KSCLC K51 29
Trang 30tool in a set of alternative tool in MRO that is equivalent to ABCOEM tool.
(3) The advantage of using alternative tool:
- This tool permits the MRO to save time and money and to
reduce the dependence on the OEM
- MRO can add some modifications that depend on their needs
(for more comfortable, safer, faster, more function)
(4) Some relevant notices or restriction from OEM which MRO must
be complied with to help them in building a valid tool
(5) The MRO has to finish the documents and tests relating torationalize the tool (e.g proof test, operation manual)
Example of alternate Tool: Retraction Actuator Fixture (RAF) for
A330/A340
Situation: OEM hasn’t offered the fixture serving for
disassembling the Retraction Actuator, the work requires at leasttwo manpower and risks to damage the part
Solutions: Two employees were in charge solving this problem,
they worked together with a Vendor (a company fabricates toolsand equipments for the MROs) in order to improve the RAF forA330/A340 so that it can be used for the work with RA of A320
Result and analysis: The tool considered as alternate tool that
supports well for the job as the purpose Besides, it also helpscompany in:
Nguyễn Đăng Tuyền – Lớp Cơ Khí Hàng Không – KSCLC K51 30
Trang 31Đồ án tốt nghiệp – Thực tập tại công ty MSA Singapore
- Saving money by improving one tool to multi-function instead
of fabricating two ones
- Saving space for installing and other involving fee
- Saving time and Improve operation efficiency (safer, using lessmanpower)
- The company ordered two tools from vendor and now the shopcan do any case without waste by waiting: a pair of A330/340,
a pair of A320 or one A330/340 + one A320
Nguyễn Đăng Tuyền – Lớp Cơ Khí Hàng Không – KSCLC K51 31
Trang 32Retraction Actuator Fixture for A330/A340 is added function for A320
Enhancing the efficiency of tools
Build the alternative tools or design the in-house tool
ToolingTooling is a mandatory job in a MRO, together with the othersjob, supports all necessary tools for the process and help MROsave time and expense on tooling The engineer who is in charge
of tooling that may involve many fields (such as: mechanical,Nguyễn Đăng Tuyền – Lớp Cơ Khí Hàng Không – KSCLC K51 32
Trang 33Đồ án tốt nghiệp – Thực tập tại công ty MSA Singapore
hydraulic, pneumatic, electric-electronic) has to support for everytool as required in the document, otherwise they will support forprojects of company to improve the production, for example:Continuous Improvement Program
Alternative tool is commonly used in MROAlternative tool may give the MRO some advantages such as:
Much lower cost as compared to OEM tool
More function as compared to OEM tool
Much higher portability as compared to OEM tool
Lower energy consumption as compared to OEM tool
Not complicated to operate as compared to OEM tool
II.3.2.An example of purchasing the tool
(1) Receive the demands for tool from QA or EngineeringManagement or technician
Some mandatory tasks must be carried out before the purchasingstep According to the purposes of demand, such as for replacingthe broken tools or enhancing the efficiency of work, theinvestigation or technical modification should be introduced whenneeded to make sure that the new tools will serve better than theold ones
(2) In the purchasing step, the engineers who are in charge of toolingwill negotiate with a number of vendors about the quality of tool, the lead time, the cost and the responsibility of vendor in order tofind the best vendors according to the profit made for the MRO.The lead time and responsibility often depends on the relationshipbetween MRO and the Vendor
Nguyễn Đăng Tuyền – Lớp Cơ Khí Hàng Không – KSCLC K51 33
Trang 34Assemble a fixture for retraction actuator
(3) The task the IA student can have opportunity to join is purchasethe new OEM tool for the new maintenance plan The Engineerwill:
Look up and print the tool drawing and the Manual of tool at
OEM website (e.g Boeing website, choose My Boeing fleet)
Build the purchase request and send it to at least three vendor
(the organization can fabricate the tool on demand)
Make a choice of the vendor and send the purchase order to
the purchaser of MRO
Raise the Purchase Requisition and send to the purchaser
Do check when receiving tool
Assemble the tool and instruct the technician the right
operation manner
After receiving the Purchase Requisition, the purchaser will sendthe Purchase Order to the Vendor and monitor the business Thepurchasing will be closed when the procedure of receiving andpayment are finished

II.4.1.Assignment in Warranty against OEM
(1) Understand the procedure
MSA is an MRO; this is a joint-venture between MSInternational and SIAEC, and MSI was formed by two OEMMessier Bugatti and Messier Dowty before the integration thisyear
The service as Warranty against OEM in MSA is understood asbelow:
- When a customer buys new equipment from the OEM, here isMessier -Dowty, every problem arises for a given period oftime from purchasing such as fault will be tested, and thenrepaired or replaced at MSA in accordance with the agreementbetween MSA and OEM
- For the component as Retraction Actuator, the customer will
send it to MSA Firstly, after receiving inspection, MSA will
do the test to check that there is any fault with the component
If there is a fault found (e.g leakage), then they disassemblethe component for further investigation, and they send theFindings report to let OEM know the conclusion on defect andthe relevant disposition to bring the component back toserviceable Finally, OEM will make decision on what should
be done next for the component, and send the spares needed toMRO to repair and send the part to Customer
- The OEM will take care of all the expense involving this job atMRO but in some frame of man-hour
- In MSA, the components can be done here include:
o Change Over Valve, shimmy damper
o Retraction Actuator and brake rod
Nguyễn Đăng Tuyền – Lớp Cơ Khí Hàng Không – KSCLC K51 36

(2) Observe testing and find the cause
Nguyễn Đăng Tuyền – Lớp Cơ Khí Hàng Không – KSCLC K51 37
Trang 38Here is an example with Retraction Actuator I participated andassist the engineer to do this job.
The procedures for this job are:
a) Get information on reported defect from removal reason inthe accompanying form
b) Check the info: part number and serial number, make surethat meet the info in the form
b Testing of the hydraulic component often requires aHydraulic supply unit, which is capable of supplyingpressure till 3000psi, and a fixture for this component
So all the possible danger should be in mind to protecthuman
c The test with high pressure for many times has to beperformed by an experienced person Someunnecessary step of procedure will be skipped onlywhen having enough experienced The test should be sodone that the fault is verified as soon as possible, at alowest pressure if possible
d The test that is so easy when the fault is so clear, butfor other case, some tips will be applied to clarify thereal fault
e) Disassemble to further investigation
Nguyễn Đăng Tuyền – Lớp Cơ Khí Hàng Không – KSCLC K51 38
