mat erial is not so rigid that brit le fractur oc urs d ring the t es , or so deforma le, in an ir eve sible

6 A pparatus
6.1 Tensie testing machine (not pen ulum type), simiar to that spe ified in ISO 5 7-3, ha ving the
folow ing char acte is ics
6.1.1 It shal be p we dr i ven an ca a le of maintaining the a propr iate rate of gr ipsep ration spe ified
in Clause 9 It is es ential that the lo d measur ing devic is eq ip ed with an autographic recording devic
to record the lo d a pled to the spe imen as a fu ction of ela sed time from the s ar t of the test
6.1.2 T e g rips shal be eq ipped with ch cks desig ned to se ur ely hold the leg s of the tes spe imen
without slp The chucksshal be wide than the width of the tes spe imen an , in or de that they r emain
p r alel to each othe d ring a test , they shal not be mou ted on swivel joint
6.2 Suitable equipment for me suring the thicknes of spe imens b the method desc ibed in
ISO 45 3 F r emb s ed fim or she ting , the a p ratus spe ified in ISO 45 1shal be used
7 Test specimens
7.1 Tes spe imens shal ha ve the sha e and dimensionsshown in Fig ure 1 The leng th of the sl t in the
c ntr e of the spe imen shal be 7 mm ± 1mm
7.2 The tes spe imens shal be cut so that the edg es ar e smo th and fr ee fr om notches Examination

p rticular atention to thetip of the slt in the c ntr e of thespe imen
7.3 The pr ope ties of c rtain types of fim an she ting mate ials ma y v ry with direction in the plane
of the fim (anisotr opy) In such cases, it is es ential to pr ep re two g r oups of tes spe imens with their
major a es respe tively p r alel an pe pen icular to the dir ection of some featur e of the fim or she ting
which is eithe visible or infe r ed fr om knowledg e of the method of it man factur e
The dir ction of t es ing is defined asthe dir ction of the long a is of the t es spe imen
W ith some ty es of f ilm, dife ent t ear r sis anc r sult ma be o tained for any dir ction of t es ing
(for ex mple, machine dir ction or transve se dir ction)depen ing, for ex mple, in the case of machine
dir ction t es spe imens, on w hethe the t ear pro a ation is in the dir ction of proc s ing or a ains
the proc s dir ction ( e Figur 2) When this is k own t o oc ur, two groups oft es spe imensshal be
cut in the dir ction of t es ing an slt so that r sult can be o tained for the two p s ible dir ctions of
t ear pro a ation

8.1 A minimum of five tes spe imens shal be tes ed in each of the r eq ir ed directions of testing
8.2 Spe imens which show a tear out of lne to the ex tent that the tear r eaches one of the edg es of the
tes spe imen shal be discar ded an furthe spe imenstes ed ( e 1 3)
9 Speed of testing
The spe d of t es ing shal be one of the folowing:
— 2 0 mm/min ± 1 %;
— 2 0 mm/min ± 1 %
NOTE A t present time, b th spe ds of testing are common throughout the world F or the time b ing, b th
are b ing alowed for the p rpose of this part of ISO 63 3 Subseq ent revisions of this part of ISO 63 3 might
only incorporate the testing spe d of 2 0 mm/min
10 Conditioning
Unles othe wise spe if ied, t es spe imens shal becon itioned an t est ed in ac ordanc with ISO 2 1,
using atmosphe e 2 °C 5 %, ex cept that w hen a mat erial is known not t o be sensitive t o h midity,
atmosphe e 2 °C ma be used
11 Procedure
11.1 Measur e the thick es of the mate ial u de tes using measuring devic s complying with the
r eq ir ement of ISO 45 3 If, howeve , the fim is ve y thin or if it is emb s ed, dete mine the thick es
b the method of ISO 45 1
11.1.1 When using measuring devic s complying with ISO 45 3, measure the thick es of the tes
spe imen at hr ee eq idis ant p int betwe n the tip of the slt an the o p site en of the tes spe imens
Calculate the mean v lue
11.1.2 When using the method of ISO 45 1, the a verag e thick es of the fim sample shal be taken as
the thicknes of the tes spe imen
11.2 S t the initial sep ration of the g r ips to 7 mm C refull y clamp an algn the tes spe imen legs in the
gr ips so that it major axis coincides with an imag inar y lne joining the c ntre of the gr ips ( se Figure 3)
