Unit 9: A FIRST- AID COURSE Lesson 1: Getting started + Listen and read

I Objectives: By the end of the lesson, Ss will be able to:

• Revise some words and phrases relating to a first-aid course.

Give instructions.

II Language content

Vocabulary: bleed, sting, emergency, ambulance, hurt, injured, wound….

Grammar: Requests and offers.

III Method

• Individually.

• Ask – answer.

• Pair work.

IV Teaching aids:

• Pictures and posters.

• Tape and cassette.

• Real objects.

• Word cards.

V Procedure:

1 Warm up (7 minutes)

• Questions: Asks students to answer some questions.

Keys: Students’ answers.

2 Presentation (13 minutes)

* Getting started

- Asks the students to tell the names of the things

which can be used in first-aid.

- Has the students open their books and gives the

names of the things in the textbook.

- Asks the students to discuss with their groups

what would they do in these situations which

require first-aid.

- Calls on some groups to give their answers and

corrects.

Possible answers:

a Use cold water to ease the pain.

b Use alcohol to wash the cut.

c Use cotton wool to stop the bleeding.

d Use medical oil.

* Pre – teach new words following steps and

principles of teaching words.

- Listen and give the names of things.

- Look at the things and give their names.

- Discuss with their groups what they would

do in these situations which require first-aid.

- Have the students listen to the tape twice

- Divides class into pairs Asks them to practice the dialogue in

- Checks their answers and give feedback: a, b, c, e, f.

- Practice the dialogue in pairs

- Some pairs of Ss practice reading the dialogue

• Learn by hear all the new words and structure.

• Prepare for Unit 9 – lesson 2

Situations which require first-aid

V Procedure:

1 Warm up (7 minutes)

- Give the game of “Network”: Asks each group to send one

representative to go to the board Each representative has to

write down as quickly as possible all the situations which

require first-aid The person who has more correct answers and

finish first will be the winner

- Asks the students to answer some questions:

+ I want you to get me a bandage How can I say?

+ I’d like you to join the game with me How can I say?

+ I tell my father that I will come home before 9 How can I

say?

- Says: Today we continue Unit 9: A FIRST-AID COURSE

In this lesson, we will practice making and responding to

requests, offers and promises

- Play game in two teams

- Listen to the teacher carefully and answer the questions

- Listen to the teacher carefully

2 Pre – speaking (8 minutes)

- Presents and explains the table in the textbook to the

students

a To make a request:

+ Will / Would / Could / Can you (please) + bare inf …?

Responses:

+ Sure / OK / All right

+ I’m sorry I can’t / I’m afraid not

- Look at the table in the textbook, listen to the teacher and take notes

Ex1: Will you open the window? It’s hot here

b To make an offer:

+ Will / Won’t you / Shall I / Can I + bare inf …?

+ Would you like + to inf …?

+ What can I do / get for you?

+ Can I get you …?

Responses:

+ Yes, please / That would be nice

c To make a promise:

- Give the difference between the use of “shall / will”

- Asks students to look at the picture on page 82 and write out

all the verbs describing the actions of the people in it

- Tells the students the group having the most right verbs is the
