PREPOSITIONS / PHRASAL VERBS

I Prepositions

+ Prepositions of time: in, on, at, for, after, before, between, up to, till, until …

We use:

at for a PRECISE TIME

on for DAYS and DATES

in for MONTHS, YEARS, CENTURIES and LONG PERIODS

at

times: at 8pm, at midnight, at 6:30

holiday periods: at Christmas, at Easter

at night/noon

at the weekend

at lunchtime, at dinnertime, at breakfast time

on

days: on Monday, on my birthday, on Christmas Day

days + morning / afternoon / evening / night: on Tuesday

morning

dates: on the 20th of June

in

years: in 1992, in 2006

months: in December, in June

decades: in the sixties, in the 1790s

centuries: in the 19th century

seasons: in the winter/summer

in the morning, in the afternoon, in the evening

+ Prepositions of place: in, on, at, above, below, behind, beside, in front of, between …

In general, we use:

at for a POINT

II Phrasal verbs

+Verb + preposition / adverb ( put on, turn off, look for, take over ……)

+ Special meaning, can’t be figured out by the meaning of each word + same verb with a different preposition/adverb → the meaning changes Example: turn + on = to start the flow of electricity, water…by moving a switch, button

turn + off = to stop the flow of electricity, water…by moving

a switch, button

+ Some phrasal verbs have more than one meaning

Example: take off = to remove sth

take off = to leave the ground and begin to fly
