UNIT 4: ORGANIZING A PRESENTATION

Lesson aims:

On completion of this unit, students will

 know how to organize the body of a presentation

 learn some techniques of making the content of a presentation

 get some experience in making a full presentation

 the organization of the body of a presentation

 Structuring a full presentation

 The language use in the content of a presentation CONTENTS:

 Warm -ups

 Ask students to do homework assignments in groups or individually

 Pre – Speaking Activities

 In groups, answer the following questions Then say the responses out

 What does the body of a presentation contain?

 How many main ideas are there in the content of a speech?

 What should be included in the content of a speech?

 What are the three main ways of organizing a speech?

 Suggest other ways to organize a speech

 While – Speaking Activities

 In groups, discuss the meanings of three commonly used patterns in

organizing a speech Are there any differences in using them to organize a speech?

 Chronological Pattern

 Topical Pattern

 Problem – Solution Pattern

 In pairs, decide two supporting ideas for each main point of the following topics and write them down

Thesis Statement: Raising children who are active learners

Purpose: To inform the audience about the methods for developing active learners

 Main point : Teach them to ask questions

 Main point : Teach them responsibility

 Main point : Teach them organizational skills

 In groups, brainstorm a list of issues that are important in school

 Each group selects an issue to be used as a topic for speech Then write a thesis statement and to discuss the organizational pattern it might use to develop it The outline should look like this:

Good afternoon ladies and gentlemen My name is Svitlana I’m delighted to be here with you today The goal of my presentation is to tell you how we can save our planet

by recycling more and more and more As Richard Burke said once,’ If you want to have things that you have never had before, you need to start doing things that you have never done before.’ And that apply to all of us Either we already recycling

champions or just considering the possibility of recycling, there is always a way to

recycle more and more, more and more I will tell you the elephant story If you have ever been to a circus or zoo, you have probably wondered why it is that huge, old

elephants and tiny baby elephants tethered with exactly the same chain A fully- grown – up elephant could, if it wanted to, simply walk away without even breaking into a sweat But that’s just the point The old elephant has forgotten what it is like to

struggle, to be free The baby elephant, who constantly pulls and tugs at the chain, still has the motivation to succeed That’s the end of the story So, let’s be the baby

elephants and struggle for the better environment

Today, firstly, we will discuss the importance of recycling in saving our planet and

postponing the greenhouse effect Secondly, I will brief you on the current situation

on the global warming And thirdly, I will give you some ideas on increasing recycling because, as I said before, there are always to recycle more and more, more and more

My presentation will take approximately five minutes and I will be happy to answer your questions at the end of my presentation
