On completion of this unit, students will
know different types of visual aids
learn the purposes of using visual aids
learn how to use some common types of visual aids
CONTENTS:
Warm –ups:
Activity 1: Look at the pictures (From the textbook page 23) and write their English
names of these media and tools used in presentations Then check them with your partner
Activity 2: In pairs, answer the question.
When, if ever, do you use the above media and tools in presentation? Which do you find the most effective? Why?
Pre – speaking activities
Activity 3: Discuss with a partner the reasons for using visual aids.
Activity 4: Read the following statements about PowerPoint Slides Which ones do
you agree with? Why or Why not?
The presentation handout should not be the same document as the presentation slides
It’s OK if there are English spelling mistakes on a slide as no one expects me to
be perfect
You shouldn’t use too many colors
I need to include all details and data on my slides – that’s my business and that’s what my audience expect!
A good presenter uses visual material to support the message and not to give the message
I see and I remember
The slides are the first thing I prepare as they’re the most important part of my presentations
If the slides are detailed enough, I can just read them aloud if I forget what I was going to say
There should never be more than seven words on a slide

A picture is worth a thousand words
The audience can always read if they can’t understand you
Every visual aid should lead to my conclusion
It’s annoying and confusing if a presenter talks about the subjects that are not even on the slide
Less is more
I appreciate it when the presenter doesn’t rely on PowerPoint but does
something a little different, such as using a flip chart or objects
Activity 5: Listen to the three extract from presentations and tick (√) the media used.

PowerPoint slides Which slide is more effectively? Why? (See the textbook on page 26)
Activity 9: Listen to the two short excerpts from presentations Complete the slides
and find headlines (See the textbook on page 27)
Activity 10: Listen again and complete the sentences Then compare them with your
partners

Activity 11: Discuss with your partner some elements that apply to creating visual
aids:

Consistency:

Special effects:
Activity 12: Discuss in groups some advantages and disadvantages of using slides
when making a presentations Then say them in front of the class

Homework assignment
Activity 14: Prepare a ten- minute presentation Use any types of visual aids to make
your presentation more interesting The topic is “ Some benefits of learning
presentation skill.”
Activity 15: Choose a topic related to your job and make a ten – minute presentation
Don’t forget to use slides to clarify what you talk
