Unit 4: Our past (6 lessons)

Lesson 1: Getting started - Listen and read

I Aims:

Talking about past habits using “used to”

II Teaching aids: - Tape

- Pictures

- Students themselves III Procudure:

1, Warm up:

Getting started: Look at the picture and write name the things that don’t belong to

the past

1- mobile phone 5-traditional dress (ao dai)

7-4 - lighting fixture

2, Presentation:

- Pre - teach: look after (v) = take care of (v)

without (pre) >< with (pre) folktale (n) chuyện cổ tích, dân gian

Great - grandma (n): Cụ bà

- Pre - questions:

+ where did Nga’s grandmother live when she was young?

+ What did she often do at that time?

- Ask ss to listen to the tape and then read the dialogue to find the answers to pre-questions

- Give new structure:

* Note: new structure is used when acting was often in past, but now it isn’t.

3, Practice:

- Let Ss do exercise 1 (P.39) : Ask and answer the questions

Tacking about the difference between life in the past and that at present using “used to”

- Students themselves III Procedure:

1, Warm up:

- Give some questions about the weather, students themselves

a, What the weather like today?

b, what did you user to do when you were small?

c, what didn’t you use to do when you were small?

2, Pre - speaking:

Revision:

a, True or False repetition drill:

- Let ss prepare some statements about Nga’s grandmother (some are true - some are false) Ss repeat the True statements, for the False ones they have to stay silent + She used to live on a farm  T

+ She used to go to school  F

+ She used to work in an office  F

+ She used to stay home  T

b, Transformation:

T says sth about Nga’ life now * Ss transform them to Nga’s Grandmom

- Nga goes to school life in the past

 But her grandmother used to stayhome/

3, While - speaking:

- Get ss to wok in groups, discuss and write down the differences between life now and in the past using the 2 pictures (P.40)

Eg: a, People used to live in small houses, but now they live in big houses and tall buildings

b, People used to walk, but now they go by bike, bicycle, cars,

c, Children didn’t used to go to school, but now they go to school everyday

- Find someone who:

- Get bad marks

- Go to school on foot

- Get up late

- Watch TV after dinner

4, Post - speaking

- Give some pictures about the famous people such as Hong Ngoc singer, Beckam soccer star and get ss write about them using “used to”

I Aims:

- Listening to a story to draw out a moral lesson

II Teaching aids: - Tape

- Students’ themselves III Procedure:

1, Warm up:

Guessing game:

Ss complete the sentences “I used to last year” and write on a strip of paper One comes to the front of the class The other guess what’s on that S’s strip of paper by asking “Did you use to last year?” The teacher is the last one that the class ask questions and the T’s sentences is “I used to read children’s stories” “And today I’m going to tell you one of them”

2, Pre - listening:

- Pre - teach:

to lay (eggs) - laid (v): đẻ trứng

excitedly (adv): hân hoan, phấn khởi

amazement (n): sự kinh ngạc

foolish (a): ngu ngốc

greedy (a): tham lam

- Ordering: a-kill chicken

3, While - listening:

- Have ss listen to the story and check their ordering

- Let ss listen again and choose the most suitable more lesson (P.41) “”Don’t be foolish and greedy”

- Give some questions and get ss to work in pairs:

a, How did the farmer’s family at first? Why?

b, What did he discover one day?

c, How did the farmer one day?

d, What did they decid to do? What for?

e, Could they collect any more eggs?

4, Post - listening:

- Let ss go to the board and write the answers on it

Because everyday they collected eggs and wnet to the market and sld them

b, The farmer discovered a gold egg oneday when he collected eggs

c, He and his wife felt excited and happy then

d, They decided to cut all chicken in their corp They wanted to find more gold eggs

e, No, they couldn’t collect any more eggs

- Ask some student retell the story using the answers on the board

5, Homework: - Learn by heart new words.

- Do exercise 7 (P.31) in workbook

1 Warm up:

- Dictation list: died, married, started, appeared, changed, fitted, owned, stopped,

decided, wanted

Let ss listen and write the words in the right column

2, Pre - reading
