What is N’ASA?

N’ASA is an organization of Actuarial Science Students at the University of Nairobi that targets to link the students with the professional world

How to join N’ASA

 Simply pay a registration fee of Ksh 500 that caters for the entire 4 years

 That translates to a paltry Ksh 4.17 weekly!

 Provide a signed passport photo to process

your membership ID card

A four-year course with:

 12 units in 1st year.

 12 units in 2nd year.

 10 units in 3rd year.

 10 units in 4th year

All units are either:

 Actuarial units (SAC);

 Statistical units (STA); or

 Mathematical units (SMA)

To get a 1 st Class Honours:

 Do not fail a single unit throughout the course

 Manage a minimum of 14 out of 20 A’s in 3rd and

4th year

 Considerations are given to students with a high subject average or those in leadership

positions

To become an actuary:

Join a recognized professional body such as:

 IFoA – Institute & Faculty of Actuaries, U.K.

 SOA – Society of Actuaries, U.S.A.

 ASSA – Actuarial Society of South Africa, RSA

and complete a rigorous series of professional exams

combined with hands-on work experience

When can you start the exams?

 You can start SOA exams right now if you are good enough in Financial Mathematics & Statistics!

 You can start your IFoA exams after 2nd year when you’ll be ready for Financial Mathematics, Finance and Financial Reporting, Business Economics and Statistics

STRUTURE OF IFoA EXAMS

 Core Technical (CT) stage: 9 subjects, ALL of which you

must pass or be exempted from CT9 is a two-day

residential course

 Core Applications (CA) stage: 3 subjects You need to pass

or be exempted from all the 3

 Specialist Technical (ST) stage: 9 subjects You need to

pass or be exempted from 2

 Specialist Applications (SA) stage: 7 subjects You need to

pass only 1

The professional path:

 After CT and CA exams, and a year's work-based skills, you can take a one-day professionalism course and qualify as an Associate Actuary.

 To qualify as a Fellow of the IFoA , you will need to take the ST and SA exams, have three years of work-based skills and then take a two-day professionalism course.

You can complete your CT papers by graduation!

 CT1 Financial mathematics

 CT2 Finance and financial reporting

 CT3 Probability and mathematical statistics

How much does it cost?

 The IFoA offers special rates to overseas students in commonwealth countries like Kenya

 IFoA membership payable once costs £ 130

 Annual subscription payable annually costs £ 69

 One CT paper costs £ 80
