In this Tec nical Sp cification, ca ital let ers are u ed for terms definin the MXF f ile

stan ardized in the SMPTE publ cation whic are cited in the normative ref eren es

4 Overview of the MXF f ile f ormat

The MXF fi e format is stan ardized in SMPTE, an diff erent asp cts of the detai ed

sp cification are covered in several stan ard The general p rt is sp cified in

SMPTE ST 3 7-1, whic defines the data stru ture of the MXF fi e for the interc an e of

au io-vis al material, al the comp nents of the MXF f ile format an the req irements to

ena le these comp nents to b ad ed as a plu -in to an MXF fi e

The MXF Generic Container is sp cified in SMPTE ST 3 9-1 an SMPTE ST 3 9-2 The

Generic Container is the native Es en e Container of the MXF f ile b d an these stan ard

4.2 Fi e structure

An overview of the MXF fie stru ture is s own in Fig re 1 The general stru ture of the MXF

f ile comprises thre comp nents: the Fi e He der, the Fi e Body an the Fi e Fo ter

4.2.2 Fi e He der

The Fie He der is located at the start of the MXF f ile an in lu es a He der Partition Pac

4.2.3 Fi e Body

The Fi e Body provides the mec anism f or emb d in Es en e Data s c as au io, vide an

other as ociated data within the MXF fies The Fi e Bod contain zero or more Es en e

Containers an , if there is more than one Es en e Container in the Fie Bod , the Es en e

Containers are multiplexed together u in Partition (se 4.3) Furthermore, the fie b dy may

in lu e an in ex ta le an a re etition of the He der Metadata as an o tion

4.2.4 Fi e Fo ter

The Fie Fo ter is located at the en of the f ile As s own in Fig re 1, the Fi e Fo ter in lu es

4.3.2 He der Partition

The He der Partition is the f irst Partition of the MXF fi e, an is located at the start of the MXF

f ile fol owin the o tional Ru -In p c The Fi e He der of the MXF fi e alway in lu es one

4.3.3 Body Partition

The MXF f ile has zero or more Body Partition As s own in Fig re 2, the Bod Partition Pac

is located at the start of the Body Partition
