With a few ex e tion , a ronautical grou d l g tin is desig ed for series circ it tec nolog

o eratin with a con tant c r ent an a maximum input voltage of 5 0 0 V a.c rms, in lu in

toleran es The input voltage to the series circ it is con tantly adju ted by the con tant

c r ent reg lator to maintain the series circ it c r ent ir esp ctive of the variation in the lo d

The pro erties an c aracteristic of the con tant c r ent reg lators are provided in

IEC 618 2 Due to the stru ture of the series circ it, i.e a series con ection of al lo d , the

u ual protective devices f or p rson el protection of an IT, TT or TN network can ot b

a pl ed

Aeronautical grou d l g tin is def i ed as an l g t provided as an aid to air navigation an as

s c is s bject to sp cif i req irements with resp ct to its resi en e, avai a i ty, an

service bi ty levels Therefore, in ulation f aults in the series circ it are often tolerated, an

do not le d to the automatic dis on ection of the electrical s p ly to the series circ it

In view of the a ove IEC 618 1 states that no work of an kin is normal y p rmit ed on lve

series circ its without first con u tin a s ita le an s f ficient Ris As es ment an u in

a pro riate protective eq ipment ac ordin to IEC 618 1

The electrical c aracteristic of the con tant c r ent series circ its are often conf used with

those of IT, TT or TN network , i.e con tant input voltage, eq ipment con ected in p ral el,

an a lo d-de en ent c r ent In practice, it is not alway e s to as ig rated voltages

cor ectly to in ivid al comp nents of the series circ it or to determine p s ible tou h

voltages In a con tant c r ent series circ its, the rated voltage of the eq ipment in the series

circ it an the maximum tou h voltage feq ently ex e d the normal main input voltage

In a series circ it in tal ation the series circ it input voltage is divided in pro ortion to the

internal resistan es of the variou lo d The rated voltage, i.e the voltage b twe n the input

l nes of the eq ipment, is defined by the series circ it c r ent that flows throu h the

eq ipment an its input imp dan e Sin e input imp dan e de en s on the eq ipment desig

an the series circ it c r ent is con tant, the input voltage remain the same f or e c item of

eq ipment As a res lt of the provision of c r ent control in the series circ it the series circ it

input voltage is lo d-de en ent an cor esp n s to the s m of al p rtial voltages in the

series circ it

This is dif ferent to determinin the maximum p s ible tou h voltage to e rth in a series

circ it Sin e one or more e rth f aults, of varyin resistan e to e rth, mayb present, the

tou h voltage to e rth may as ume any value up to the maximum series circ it input voltage

de en in on the location of the e rth fault an the eq ipment in tal ed in the series circ it

Therefore when determinin the dielectric stren th again t e rth p tential it is u ual to take

the maximum series circ it input voltage Su h p c l arities of the series circ it have b en

taken into ac ou t in the req irements for lamp s stems in this stan ard

Sin e there are only a f ew ef fective safety fe tures avaia le for p rson el protection in series

circ it tec nolog the protective me s re “Saf ety extra low voltage (SELV) an “Protective

extra low voltage (PELV) is a pl ed in this stan ard for the s p ly of lamp s stems This

me s re is common practice an can resort to the a pl cation of wel -k own an ac e ted

methodology The introd ction of SELV/PELV in this typ of a pl cation has b en made

p s ible by the introd ction of new i uminant tec nology that has lower p wer req irements

an hen e req ires a lower voltage s pply

• maximum output p wer (W an VA);

• markin of the as embly as clas I I (SELV) with s mb l original 518 of IEC 6 417

(Roman I I within a rhombu )

The SELV/PELV markin s al b avai a le to maintenan e p rson el an e si y re da le in

For a SELV s p ly, o erational e rthin of active p rts nor the intentional con ection of p rts

to a protective con u tor or to an e rth con u tor ac ordin to IEC 61 4 is not p rmit ed

Where the safety secon ary s stem is expl citly defined as a PELV s p ly, the PELV circ its

an /or exp sed con u tive p rts of eq ipment s p l ed by the PELV circ it may b e rthed

In location where protective s re nin is u ed f or the purp se of protective se aration the

protective s re n s al b se arated f rom e c adjacent circ it by b sic in ulation inten ed

The maximum SELV/PELV s al not ex e d the f ol owin values:

• 5 V a.c for a.c voltages in the 15 Hz to 10 Hz ran e,

• 120 V d.c f or direct voltages with a maximum harmonic content of 10 % of the direct

voltage eff ective value

SELV/PELV an non-SELV/PELV circ its s al not b car ied in the same ca le

4.7.3 Prote tiv s paration from the primary s rie circ it

The p wer s p ly u it of the lamp s stems with the SELV/PELV s p ly s al provide a

galvanic, safe se aration fom the primary side of the series circ it

The input voltage of one sin le SELV /PELV s p ly is defined as the voltage b twe n the two

• reinf orced in ulation rated f or the hig est voltage present, or

• protective s re nin with the protective s re n b in se arated f om e c adjacent circ it

by b sic in ulation rated for the adjacent circ it voltage, or

• a combination of these provision

If the con u tors of the se arated circ it are contained together with the con u tors of other

circ its in a multi-con u tor ca le or in another groupin of con u tors, they s al b

in ulated, in ivid al y or col ectively, f or the hig est voltage present, so that double in ulation

is ac ieved

If an comp nent is con ected b twe n the se arated circ its, that comp nent s al comply

with the req irements f or protective imp dan e devices ac ordin to IEC 61 4

4.7.4 As embl e in the SELV/PELV s p ly

If as embl es in the SELV/PELV s p ly are con ected to the p wer s p ly by me n of an

external inter ace they s al b desig ed as Clas I eq ipment ac ordin to IEC 61 4

When a SELV s p ly is c osen there s al b no provision f or the con ection of l ve p rts to

e rth

The en los re of an as embly may b provided with an e rth terminal if it is neces ary f or an

e rth to b provide for re son other than p rson el protection

An e rth con ection may b neces ary to integrate an en los re into a l g tnin protection

The electrical s p ly to the lamp s stem is u ual y provided by the series circ it Al

s bs stems havin a direct galvanic con ection to the primary series circ it s al comply with

IEC 618 3 (AGL series tran formers)

If the electrical s p ly of a series circ it, or another voltage s p ly, is inten ed to have a

nominal voltage les than 1 0 0 V a.c the dielectric stren th can b determined ac ordin to

4.8.2 Conne tors

The l ve side of the circ it s al b eq ip ed with the soc et

Plug an soc et-outlets in SELV an PELV s stems s al comply to IEC 6 3 4-4-41 with the

f ol owin req irements:

• plu s s al not b a le to enter soc et-outlets of other non AGL voltage s stems;

• soc et outlets s al not admit plu s of other non AGL voltage s stems

5 Testing

5.1 Type te ts

The tests s al as ure that the SELV/PELV s p ly compl es with the a pl ca le IEC stan ard

ref eren ed in 4.1 to 4.8.2

Al a pl ca le typ tests of dielectric stren th s al b car ied out on a pl ca le p rts of the
