1.1 This Part of this BritishStand rd des ribes a
procedure for d etermining the resistance of p int
fims to a continuous salt fog env ironment.Two test
cond itions, difering only in temperature of
operation, are g iv en:

nor the interpretation to be g iv en to the results

In ord er to obtain g ood reproducibi ity betwe n
la oratories, it is neces ary to observ e the
recommended operating conditions, cor ect sp cing
of an positioning of specimens and to ensure
suita le siting of eq uipment Suita le forms of
equipment which ma be used to obtain the req uired
cond itions are refer ed in5.1 Results fom other
desig ns of eq uipment hav e be n found to cor elate
an such equipment ma be used, subject to

4 Test specimens
4.1 Specimens for test wi l g eneraly be p nels
prep red and coated with the materials to be tested,
but for some purposes ( for ex mple qualty control
tests) p inted components, or suita le portions of
them, ma be req uired
W here components are to be tested it is important to
select samples which are f e f om ac idental
d amag e I this is impractica le, or if the test portion
is cut fom a larg e sample, d mag ed areas or cut
ed g es etc shal be cov ered with a g ood protectiv e
coating
4.2 Preparation and coating oftest panels
4.2.1 Panels, 15 mm×10 mm or other conv enient
siz , specified and pretreated in ac ord nce with the
requirements of BS3 0 -A3

coating
4.2.4 Unles otherwise ag re d , the test p nel shal
be d amag ed with a s riber b making2 long itudinal
s ratches, 0.6mm wid e, throug h to the metal
substrate They shal extend at least& of the leng th
of the p nel and shal be positioned central y in each
v ertical half The s riber used shal be ma e f om
mid ste l0.6mm thick an sha ed to g iv e a chisel
edg e ca a le of making the req uired s ratches
5.1The eq uipment req uired consists of a chamber, a
salt solution reserv oir, a sup ly of suita ly
conditioned compres ed air, one or more atomizing
no zles, specimen sup orts, prov ision for heating
the chamber and neces ary means of control The
siz and detaied construction of the eq uipment are
optional, prov id ed the conditions obtained me t the
req uirements of this test
It is important that the chamber shal be insulated
to av oid temperature g rad ients, p rticularly with
test condition T3 W ith smal ca inets, this is
conv eniently efected b means of a d ouble skin
construction, incorporating a water jacket for
temperature control
Test cond ition T25: temperature25±2°C
Test cond ition T3 : temperature3 ±2°C

5.2 Drops of solution which fal f om the specimens
shal not be returned to the solution reserv oir for

5.3 Materials of construction shal be such that they
wi l not afect the cor osiv enes of fog Glas ,rub er
or certain plastic materials ( or lning s there f) are
suita le
5.4 The spra f om the atomizing no zle, or no zles,
shal be prev ented f om imping ing on the test
specimens b means of suita le b fles The solution
cond ensing on the b fles ma be returned to the
salt solution reserv oir; this can efect a substantial
economy in rate of consumption of the solution
Adjusta le b fles are of as istance in obtaining a
uniform col ection rate throug hout the test z ne of
the chamber ( se 9.2)
5.5 The equipment shal be sited so as to be in
d ifused l g ht and awa fom rad iator or other
sour es of heat, and d raug hts, in order to faci tate
temperature control
6 Position ofspecimens during test
6.1 Unles otherwise specified , the specimen shal
be sup orted so that the test sur aces are
betwe n15° and3 ° f om the v ertical and
prefera ly p ralel to the princip l direction of
horiz ntal flow of fog throug h the chamber In the
case of components of complcated sha e, sev eral
specimens ma be required , so that al sig nificant
suraces are ex osed substantialy in this way
Alternativ ely , b ag re ment,the component ma be
placed in the position in which it wi be as embled
in serv ice In al cases, the test sur ace shal be at
least3 mm fom any other specimen an at
least3 mm fom any wal of the chamber
It is recommended that, to obtain reasona le
reprod ucibi ty of test, the ca inet be ru at ful
ca acity to ensure ev en d isper ion of fog This ma
be achiev ed, when testing flat p nels, b
introducing blan s mad e of inert material

v aried , throug hout the test period, ev ery24hour
6.2 The specimens shal not contact any material
ca a le of acting as a wick
S ita le materials for the construction or coating of
racks or sup orts are g las , rub er, certain plastic
materials or suita ly coated wo d.Bare metals shal
not be used
6.3 Each specimen shal be placed so as to permit
fe set lng of fog on al specimens
6.4 Salt solution f om one specimen shal not be
alowed to drip on to any other specimen
7 Test solution
The test solution shal be prep red as fol ows:
Dis olv e5 ±5g sodium chlorid e, comply ing with
BS9 8 “ Va cu m sa lt fr buter a nd che s ma king”,
in each l tre of d isti ed or d e- oniz d water or water
containing les than10 p.p.m of total dis olv ed
sol ds and substantial y fe fom d is olv ed heav y
metals, p rticularly nickel, cop er and iron The pH
of the solution shal be such that when atomiz d
u der the test conditions, the colected solution
( se 9.2) wi hav e a pH6.5–7.2
8 Air supply
8.1 The compres ed air sup ly to the no zle or
no zles for atomizing the salt solution shal be fe
fom oi, oi v apour and dirt and maintained

8.2 The air shal be saturated with moisture b
means of a water wash or h mid ify ing tower, after
suita le fi tration It is prefera le to operate the
tower at temperatures wel a ov e the chamber
temperature to ensure wet fog , to ofset heat los es
an to maintain the req uired temperature in the
chamber The tower temperature should be ad justed
so that both the col ection rate (se 9.2) and
composition of col ected fog ( se Clause7) are kept
within the specified l mits For g uid nce, the
fol owing ta le shows the tower temperatures at
diferent air pres ures req uired to ofset the co l ng
efect of ex ansion at the no zle or no zles to
atmospheric pres ure for test condition T3 :
The no zle or no zles ma be operated
intermit ently b means of a suita le timer an
rela actuating a solenoid v alv e in the air sup ly ,
prov iding that the fog is maintained contin ously
( e.g air pres ure3s on, 7s of) This prov id es
means of a justing the colection rate ( se 9.2) and
it also ensures a more consistent fog distribution
with minimal directional efects

9.1 Tem perature The ex osure z ne of the test
chamber shal be maintained at the fol owing
temperatures:
9.2 Atom ization and quantity of fog At least two
clean fog col ector shal be placed in the ex osure
z ne in the prox imity of the test specimens, one near
to a no zle and another as far as pos ible f om a
no zle They shal be positioned so that no test
solution fal ing f om the test specimens is colected
The fog shal be such that for each80 0mm

of
horiz ntal col ecting area there wi be colected, in
each colector, f om 1.0–2.0ml of solution per hour,
d etermined ov er an operating period of at least16h
The colected spra solution shal
contain5 ±10g /l of sod ium chlorid e ( specific
g rav ity1.025 –1.0 0 at25°C) and pH shal
be6.5–7.2

1) Ex ose the specimen in the ca inet for the
specified period
2) Remov e the specimen, wash in cold ru ning

of the substrate, spread of cor osion and los of
ad hesion at the s ribed l nes, bl stering , softening
of the p int, or other sig ns of deterioration Then
immed iately after, remov e a15 mm×5 mm
strip of p int fom the test face with a
non-cor osiv e p int remov er comply ing with
BS3 61

11 Report oftest
The test report shal contain at least the folowing
information:
1) Id entification of material u der test
2) The product specification and any other
sup lementary information req uired for the test

3) Any d ev iation, b ag re ment or otherwise,
f om the stand rd test procedure
4) The results of the test in terms of the specified
req uirements
