procedure for d etermining the resistance of p int

fims to a continuous salt fog env ironment. Two test

cond itions, difering only in temperature of

operation, are g iv en:

1.2 The stand ard d oes not pres ribe period s of test,

nor the interpretation to be g iv en to the results

2 Corr la tion and l mitations oftest

In ord er to obtain g ood reproducibi ity betwe n

la oratories, it is neces ary to observ e the

recommended operating conditions, cor ect sp cing

of an positioning of specimens and to ensure

suita le siting of eq uipment Suita le forms of

equipment which ma be used to obtain the req uired

cond itions are refer ed in5.1 Results fom other

desig ns of eq uipment hav e be n found to cor elate

an such equipment ma be used, subject to

ag re ment betwe n the pur haser and the sup l er

The folowing sup lementary information, tog ether

with reference to a propriate stand rds where

a pl ca le,is req uired in ord er to car y out the tests

d es ribed in this stand rd :

1) Ty pe of coating or coating s

2) Nature of substrate and method of

prep ration

3) Method of a pl cation of test coating or

coating s to substrate

4) Thick es and/or weig ht of coating , or of

ind iv idual coating s in the case of multicoat

systems

5) Duration and cond itions ofdry ing of the coated

specimen ( or cond ition of stov ing , if a pl ca le)

before testing

6) Required duration of test and test conditions

( T25 or T3 )

7) How inspection of the tested coating is to be

mad e and what characteristic are to be

considered in ev aluating its resistance to this

test

4 Test specimens

4.1 Specimens for test wi l g eneraly be p nels

prep red and coated with the materials to be tested,

but for some purposes ( for ex mple qualty control

tests) p inted components, or suita le portions of

them, ma be req uired

W here components are to be tested it is important to

select samples which are f e f om ac idental

d amag e I this is impractica le, or if the test portion

is cut fom a larg e sample, d mag ed areas or cut

ed g es etc shal be cov ered with a g ood protectiv e

coating

4.2 Preparation and coating oftest panels

4.2.1 Panels, 15 mm×10 mm or other conv enient

4.2.3 I the specimen p nel is not coated on al

sur aces with the material u d er test, coat the b ck

and ed g es of the p nels with a g ood protectiv e

coating

4.2.4 Unles otherwise ag re d , the test p nel shal

be d amag ed with a s riber b making2 long itudinal

s ratches, 0.6mm wid e, throug h to the metal

substrate They shal extend at least& of the leng th

of the p nel and shal be positioned central y in each

v ertical half The s riber used shal be ma e f om

mid ste l0.6mm thick an sha ed to g iv e a chisel

edg e ca a le of making the req uired s ratches

5.1The eq uipment req uired consists of a chamber, a

salt solution reserv oir, a sup ly of suita ly

conditioned compres ed air, one or more atomizing

no zles, specimen sup orts, prov ision for heating

the chamber and neces ary means of control The

siz and detaied construction of the eq uipment are

optional, prov id ed the conditions obtained me t the

req uirements of this test

It is important that the chamber shal be insulated

to av oid temperature g rad ients, p rticularly with

test condition T3 W ith smal ca inets, this is

conv eniently efected b means of a d ouble skin

construction, incorporating a water jacket for

temperature control

5.4 The spra f om the atomizing no zle, or no zles,

shal be prev ented f om imping ing on the test

specimens b means of suita le b fles The solution

cond ensing on the b fles ma be returned to the

salt solution reserv oir; this can efect a substantial

economy in rate of consumption of the solution

Adjusta le b fles are of as istance in obtaining a

uniform col ection rate throug hout the test z ne of

the chamber ( se 9.2)

5.5 The equipment shal be sited so as to be in

d ifused l g ht and awa fom rad iator or other

sour es of heat, and d raug hts, in order to faci tate

temperature control

6 Position ofspecimens during test

6.1 Unles otherwise specified , the specimen shal

be sup orted so that the test sur aces are

betwe n15° and3 ° f om the v ertical and

prefera ly p ralel to the princip l direction of

horiz ntal flow of fog throug h the chamber In the

case of components of complcated sha e, sev eral

specimens ma be required , so that al sig nificant

suraces are ex osed substantialy in this way

Alternativ ely , b ag re ment, the component ma be

placed in the position in which it wi be as embled

in serv ice In al cases, the test sur ace shal be at

least3 mm fom any other specimen an at

least3 mm fom any wal of the chamber

It is recommended that, to obtain reasona le

reprod ucibi ty of test, the ca inet be ru at ful

ca acity to ensure ev en d isper ion of fog This ma

be achiev ed, when testing flat p nels, b

introducing blan s mad e of inert material

of the

same dimensions

The position of p nels in the ca inet should be

v aried , throug hout the test period, ev ery24hour

6.2 The specimens shal not contact any material

ca a le of acting as a wick

S ita le materials for the construction or coating of

racks or sup orts are g las , rub er, certain plastic

materials or suita ly coated wo d.Bare metals shal

not be used

6.3 Each specimen shal be placed so as to permit

fe set lng of fog on al specimens

6.4 Salt solution f om one specimen shal not be

alowed to drip on to any other specimen

7 Test solution

The test solution shal be prep red as fol ows:

Dis olv e5 ±5g sodium chlorid e, comply ing with

BS9 8 “ Va cu m sa lt fr buter a nd che s ma king”,

in each l tre of d isti ed or d e- oniz d water or water

containing les than10 p.p.m of total dis olv ed

sol ds and substantial y fe fom d is olv ed heav y

metals, p rticularly nickel, cop er and iron The pH

8.2 The air shal be saturated with moisture b

means of a water wash or h mid ify ing tower, after

suita le fi tration It is prefera le to operate the

tower at temperatures wel a ov e the chamber

temperature to ensure wet fog , to ofset heat los es

an to maintain the req uired temperature in the

chamber The tower temperature should be ad justed

so that both the col ection rate (se 9.2) and

composition of col ected fog ( se Clause7) are kept

within the specified l mits For g uid nce, the

fol owing ta le shows the tower temperatures at

diferent air pres ures req uired to ofset the co l ng

efect of ex ansion at the no zle or no zles to

atmospheric pres ure for test condition T3 :

The no zle or no zles ma be operated

intermit ently b means of a suita le timer an

rela actuating a solenoid v alv e in the air sup ly ,

prov iding that the fog is maintained contin ously

( e.g air pres ure3s on, 7s of) This prov id es
