This section of BSA U5 has be n prep red u der the d irection of the Automobie

Stand rd s Pol cy Commit e , and it forms p rt of the series of d ocuments which

relate to ty res and whe ls for motor v ehicles

There has be n no at empt to fuly define roa -whe l components in a

desig n-restrictiv e sense, but neces ary requirements are specified to achiev e

secure fixing of commer ial v ehicle road -whe ls

Fir t, in order to improv e the al g nment and fit of mating p rts, certain important

dimensions with tolerances hav e be n specified in this document for fixing s, an

a new siz of24mm, which is alrea y in l mited use, has be n introd uced The

cor esponding tolerances on whe l dimensions hav e be n introduced in

BSAU5 -2.2

Secondly , perormance req uirements for nuts, stud s, and bolts are specified to

suit the specialz d sha es of whe l fixing s to ensure both a eq uate mechanical

streng th an repeata le torq ue/clamping -for e characteristic d uring long

period s of operation and repeated v ehicle serv icing Howev er, reference has be n

ma e to existing BS fastener specifications for the majority of perormance tests

It is ex ected that stud s and bolts wi l, in g eneral, be formed b forg ing and

rol ng , an this is the recommended method of man facture

Also in con ection with roa -whe l security , at ention is d rawn to BSA U5 -2.7
