Section 1 General

1 Scope

This Part of BS AU2 7 specifies req uirements for

the perormance an instalation of dev ices

desig ned to lmit the ma imum roa spe d of motor

v ehicles b control of engine power

NOT 1 Unles otherwise refered to in clause 2, the de ice is

refer ed to here fter as the limier

NOT 2 Permi ed tolerances of the sy stem ma alow the

v hicle to e ce d the set sp ed

2 Definitions

For the purposes of this Part of BS AU2 7 the

fol owing d efinitions a ply

sensed spe d

the spe d of a motor v ehicle as indicated by , or

measured f om, the spe d sensing dev ice used as

p rt of the v ehicle’s road spe d lmiter

2.2

set spe d

the intended mean v ehicle spe d when operating in

a sta i z d condition in ac ord nce with3.3 It is

marked on the v ehicle and used for cal bration

purposes

3 Speed control on level g round

3.1 General

W hen tested in ac ord nce with the procedure g iv en

in Appendix A, the req uirements g iv en in3.2

and3.3 shal be met for each of the test ru s Spe d

shal be sensed to an ac uracy of within

±1.5mie/h( ±2.4km/ h) of actual v ehicle spe d

3.2 Transient response( se Fig ure 1)

After the set spe d is fir t achiev ed:

a) sensed spe d shal not exce d the set spe d b

more than3mie/h( 4.8km/h);

b) the rate of chang e of sensed spe d shal not

3.3 Sta i ized spe d ( se Fig ure 1)

4 Speed control on descending

g ra dients

W hen the v ehicle, run ing at its set spe d and with

the driv er’s ac elerator at its position of ma imum

trav el, is subject to an ac elerating for e due to a

down g rad ient, the l miter shal control spe d b

restricting the eng ine power to the l miter’s

minimum eng ine power control set ing

NOT The limier ma alow normal ac elerator control for the

purp ses of g ear chang ing

5 Fa ilur modes

No malfunction of the l miter shal result in an

inc ease in engine power a ov e that d emanded b

the position of the d riv er’s ac elerator

6 Checking a nd ca libration

The l miter sup l er shal prov ide documentation

d es ribing checking and cal bration proced ures It

shal be pos ible to check the set spe d whist the

v ehicle is stationary

Section 3 Instal ation

7 General

The l miter shal be suita le for instalation in the

v ehicle and shal be instal ed in ac ord nce with the

l miter sup l er’s tech ical instructions

8 Tamper- proofing

The l miter and its con ections neces ary for its

operation, except those es ential for the run ing of

the v ehicle, shal be ca a le of being protected f om

any u authoriz d ad justments or the inter uption

of its energ y sup ly b the at achment of sealng

dev ices and/or the ne d to use special to ls

9 Power supply

All components neces ary for the ful fu ction of the

lmiter shal be energ iz d whenev er the v ehicle is

being driv en

The v ehicle shal be marked with the fol owing

a) The name or trad e mark of the lmiter

calbrator

b) The number and d te of this BritishStand ard,

i.e BS AU2 7-1a:19 7

c) The set spe d , ex res ed in mie/h, at which the

v ehicle is calbrated

Appendix A Test conditions and

procedur for demonstra ting

compl ance with speed control

NOT W here the limier is desig ned for fi ing to a rang e of

v hicles,i is recommen ed that the tests are p rormed on a

“wor t case” v hicle, so that the ne d for ad i onal testng is

minimized Ex mples of wor t case siuatons are as folows

A.1 Am bient weather conditions

Mean wind spe d shal be les than6m/s with g usts

f om standing water, snow or ice

A.2 Vehicle condition

The v ehicle shal be at its kerbside mas , plus the

mas of the driv er an any observ er and test

eq uipment The ty res shal be nominaly new,

i.e neg lig ible wear, and inflated to the pres ure

recommended b the v ehicle man facturer for

operation at the v ehicle’s ma imum g ros weig ht

The power train components shal be within their

normal operating temperature rang es

A.3 Sur ac condition

The test sur ace shal be suita le to ena le
