Lesson 1: Parts 1 - 2 – 3

I Objectives: By the end of the lesson, Ss can b able to:

- Use the words and phrases related to the topic comparing places

- Ask and answer questions to compare places using comparative form (Short adjectives)

II Languages focus:

- Vocabulary: New York City, Sydney City, life, small-smaller, big-bigger, large-larger,

noisy-noisier, busy-busier

- Sentence Pattners: “Which one is …………, ………… or ………? – I think ………”

III Teaching aids:

1 Teacher’s: student’s and teacher’s book, pictures, cassette

2 Students’: books, notebooks, workbooks

III Procedure:

A Warm-up and Revision:

- Let’s chant again: “What do you think of it?”

- Play games Tic-Tac-Toe to review vocabulary

and patterns on topic places to visit and opinions

on places

- Ss chant

- Ss play games

B Presentation:

* Vocabulary

- Introduce new words and short adjectives on

topic comparing places: New York City, Sydney

City, life, small-smaller, big-bigger, large-larger,

noisy-noisier, busy-busier

- Have Ss listen and repeat in chorus, individually

Act 1 Look, listen and repeat:

Have the class look at the four pictures Introduce

the story by pointing at each character and elicit

their answers to the questions:

Who are they?

Where are they?

What are they doing?

- Have Ss listen and repeat 4 conversations (twice)

- Have Ss play role to read the dialogue in groups/

pairs

- Call some pairs to read the conversation

- Check again Ss’ understanding

- Listen and repeat

- Look, listen and answer

Mai and Tom

They’re at school

They’re asking and answering about Tom’s hometown, the USA and compare New York with Sydney

- Give out the pattern and explain how to use

- Have Ss listen and repeat again the pattern:

- Ask some pairs to ask and answer again

- Introduce phrases under 4 pictures

- Have Ss listen and repeat in chorus,

individually

2.2 Practice:

- Point at picture a and ask the question Which

one is smaller, Hoan Kiem Lake or West Lake?

Have Ss answer chorally, using the information

under the picture and the pattern I think Hoan

I Objectives: By the end of the lesson Ps will be able to:

- Review and practice new words on the topic comparing places

- Practice listening, reading and writing about how to compare places using comparative form

(Short adjectives)

II Language focus:

1 Vocabulary: review

2 Pattern: Review the pattern

III Teaching aids: student’s and teacher’s book, pictures, cassette

IV Procedures

A WARM UP

- Have Ss play game Spelling Bee to review

vocabulary

B PRESENTATION

4 Listen and write

4.1/Pre-listening:

- Explain the listening task: listen and write in the

blanks

- Have Ss read and guess the missing words first

- Predict the answer ( divide class into 2 teams)

4.2/While-listening:

- Play the recording twice for Ss to listen and write

one word in each blank

-Have Ss check their prediction and compare the

answer with their partners

- Play the recording again for Ss to check their

answers

-Give feedback and key answers:

l Sydney, noisier - 2 London, larger - 3 New York

City, busier

5 Read and complete

- Have Ss read the text in silent and listen to the

teacher’s instruction

- Explain the writing task: read and fill in the

blanks

- Have Ss read in silent and complete the text

- Ask Ss to read the answers aloud to the class

- Check and correct mistakes

Answers: 1 bigger/ larger - 2 noisier –

3 smaller

6 Let's sing

- Play the game to review old vocabulary

the rhythm

-Have class sing the song again to reinforce their

pronunciation

C Homework

Ask Ss to learn by heart the pattern Be ready for

Unit 20 (Lesson 2 : Parts 1, 2, 3)
