- Sau giải phẫu sửa van hay thay van, bệnh nhân cần được chăm sóc lâu dài.
- Khám lâm sàng mỗi tháng trong 6 tháng đầu, sau đó có thể cách 2 tháng, 3 tháng.
- Tối thiểu bệnh nhân cần dùng thuốc trợ giúp cơ tim trong 6 tháng đầu, nếu trước mổ ở NYHA III, IV hoặc rối loạn chức năng cơ tim. Tùy biểu hiện lâm sàng và dữ kiện siêu âm kiểm tra sau mổ, các thuốc có thể dùng là digitalis, lợi tiểu, ức chế men chuyển và nitrate.
- Siêu âm kiểm tra trước ra viện, vào tháng thứ 6 và mỗi năm sau đó. Trường hợp có dấu hiệu lâm sàng khác lạ hay nặng hơn cũng cần kiểm tra siêu âm . Các dữ kiện cần khảo sát sau mổ sửa van là: chức năng tâm thu của tim, còn hở van 2 lá không, nếu có dòng hở trung tâm hay lệch xéo, áp lực động mạch phổi, có hở 3 lá, có tràn dịch màng tim. Trường hợp thay van nhân tạo cần xem kỹ van có vận hành tốt, độ chênh áp lực của dòng máu qua van.
- Khi bệnh nhân được thay van cơ học, cần dùng kháng đông suốt đời.
