Week 1 – CONDITIONAL SENTENCES

I If-Sentences:

1 Type 1 – Real Conditional-Future

If + do/does - will/shall + do (I.1)

2 Type 2 – Unreal Conditional-Present/Future

If + did - would/could/might/should + do (I.4)

3 Type 3 – Unreal Conditional-Past

If + had done - would/could/might/should + have done (I.8)

4 Zero Conditional – Real Conditional-Present

If + do/does – do/does

If you pour oil into water, it always floats

5 Mixed Conditional: if-2 + if-3 (I.10)

6 Unless = If … not (II.6)

If you don’t wipe your feet, you’ll make muddy marks all over the floor

II Wish-Sentences

1 Wishes – Future & Present

a wish (that) + did (I.4)

b wish (that) + would do (I.5) → Polite Request

 S1 ≠ S2

 S1 complains about present & hopes for a future change

- I wish I were taller (S1 = S2) would be

- I wish it didn’t rain so much in England (S1 ≠ S2, unchangeable)

wouldn’t rain

2 Wishes – Past

Wish (that) + had done (II.2)

III Omitting “if” for Emphasis:

1 If-2:

If I were you I wouldn’t do that

IV Comparison with as if/though

1 Real comparison:

As if/though + any tense

You look as if you’ve just got a bad mark (Present)

It looks as though it’s going to rain (Future)

2 Unreal comparison:

a As if/though + did (past simple) – do/does (present)

They treat me as if I were their son

b As if/though + had done (past perfect) – did (past)

He jumped up as though he had stepped on a fire

V Should do & should have done

1 should do: future meaning

You should work hard and you’ll get good marks

2 should have done: past meaning

You should have worked hard Look, you got many bad marks

CONDITIONAL SENTENCES – 1

I Supply the correct form of the verb in brackets:

1 will look, find, will give

2 see, have

4 saw, would think, had escaped

5 lose, bought, would lose

I Use the given information to make conditional sentences with if

II Make sentences with the same meaning by omitting if

1 Should you need more money, go to the bank before 6 o’clock

2 Were I you, I wouldn’t do that

3 Had they realized the danger, they would have done it differently

4 Had Alan tried to explain, I’m sure the professor would have given another chance

5 Should anyone call, would you please take a message?

6 Were I your teacher, I would insist you do better work
