in Oxford street; it will save time , as

everything can be bought there, in different

departments , from a pound of cake to a

yard of ribbon, from a fur-coat worth £150 to

a lip-stick of £25.

Trang 20

2 First, they must get some shoes for Fanny

The shoe-department is on the second floor, and Fanny wants to take the moving-stairway ; but

her sister prefers the lift A shop-walker shows

them where it is When they come out of it, a fair little shop-assistant comes up to them.

Shop-assistant – “ Good afternoon, Madam;

what can I do for you?

Mrs Martin – I want two pairs of shoes for

my young sister her; a pair of walking shoes, and another one for town wear.

Shop-assistant – Please, Madam, what size

does she takes?

Trang 21

Mrs Martin – It depends on the make; three,

or three and a half

Shop-assistant – I’ll show you what we have.”

3 Fanny is then shown several pairs of shoes The

shop-girl tries them on, one after the other Those Fanny likes pinch her, and only those which she

does not like fit her!

At last 2 suitable pairs are found, and they prepare

to go to the pay-desk But the girl says: ”No, Madam, everything is paid for here.” And she puts the money into a little tube Up it goes through the ceiling to the top of the building where the cashier sits; after a few minutes, down it comes again with the bill and the

change How quick it has been!

Trang 22

4 Then, they go to the perfumery department,

for there is a big clearance-sale of scent and

Then, off they go to the tie department; they want one for Daddy’s birthday, and these silk ones are such a bargain at 4/3 a piece, that they take

three of them! Won’t Daddy be glad? After a rush

through the haberdashery department for some

safety-pins, Fanny and her sister are tired out It’s

so unpleasant to be squeezed and jostled by the crowd! But after a nice cup of hot tea at the tea-

room upstairs, they fell refreshed and ready to

face shopping again.
