UNIT 13 LETTER Z

Lesson 3

I OBJECTIVES:

1 Knowledge: : By the end of the lesson, students will be able to:

 Read and say the three Zzwordscorrectly

 Recognize and say an extra Zz word correctly

Vocabulary: Zoo, zebra, zip, zero

2 Skills:

- Develop Ss reading, writing, speaking and listening skills

3 Attitude: Educate Sts to love their lesson

Work hard

III TEACHING AIDS:

1 Teacher’s: student’s and teacher’s book, pictures, cassette.

2 Students’: books, notebooks, workbooks.

II TEACHING METHODS:

- Work in pairs , individual, in groups …

IV PROCEDURE:

1 Class organization:

- Greeting: Good morning/ Good afternoon How are you?

- Checking for the students’ attendence:

2 Warm up :5’

Activity: What is it?

Teacher holds up a phonics card, partly hidden by a sheet of paper

Slowly reveal the phonics cards The students try to guest what the phonics card is

Teacher can use some more cards from the previous units

3 New lesson

* Activity 1: 13’ – apply information technology

Point to the lettersand elicit their names and sounds

Explain the activity

Ask the students to find and colour the pictures with

the z sound

Go around the classroom providing any necessary help

Ask the student to name the other items

6 Which ones begin with the z sound? Colour

Activity 2 (15’)

 Show the students the zero phonics card Point to it

and say: /z/ - zero Ask them to repeat

Make a zero with your thumb and your index finger

and say: /z/ - zero Encourage the students to do the

same

Say the letter The students perform the action and say

the letter and the word (if they can)

Play the CD The students listen, point to and repeat

the word

Point to the picture and have students name them

Allow the students some time to colour in the pictures

of words start with the /z/ sound.

Go around the classroom providing any necessary help

Activity: Craftwork Ask the students to take out their

notebooks

Ask them to choose one word then draw the letter

Yand the picture of the item in their notebooks

Tell them to decorate the letter and the picture

The first three students who finish will present their

letters and pictures to the class

7 Listen, point and repeat Colour the pictures of the words that start with the z sound Say the z words

Write on the board the capital letter Z (write slowly

to demonstrate its formation)

Point to it and elicit the sound /z/

Show the formation in the air (taking care when

facing to the students that the letter is formed the

correct way for them)

Repeat with the small letter z

The students trace the letters in their activity books

Go around and provide any necessary help Ask the

students to say the sound of the letter

1 Trace and say

* Activity 2: (5 mins)

Explain the activity

First, the students trace the letters in the boxes

Then draw lines from the letters to the corresponding

pictures

Check around the classroom

2 Trace and match

Answer keys: 1 Vv- violin

2 Ww- well 3 Xx- taxi 4 Yy- yacht

Divide the class into 2 teams, A and B Ask 2

students from each team to come to the board

Write the four words zoo, zebra, zip, zeroon the

board

Teacher calls out/ shows the phonics card of one of

the phonic cards, the 2 students have to race to touch

the word

The student who touches first wins a point for his/

her team

The team with the more points wins

* Activity 4: (5 mins)

 Explain the activity

Point to the pictures and elicit their names

Ask the students to write the letter Zz in the box

Ask them to colour the pictures that start with the z

sound

Go around and provide any necessary help

Write the letter Zz Colour the pictures of the words that start with the z sound

Activity 5: (5 mins)

Explain the activity

Point to the letters and say the sounds

Point to the pictures and elicit their names

 Ask the students to tick the correct sound for each

item

Go around the classroom and provide any necessary

help

Look and tick (  ) the correct sound

4 Consolidation: (3’)
