A: READING

I AIMS/OBJECTIVES OF THE LESSON

1 Language focus - To provide Ss with new words and phrases

2 Skills - To develop reading skills: skimming for general ideas and specific

information

3 Attitudes - To encourage Ss work in pairs and groups

II PREPARATION

1 Teacher: - Teaching aids: Lesson plan, text book, new words

- Teaching method: Communicative language teaching

2 Students: - Read Unit 11– reading at home

III PROCEDURE

1 Class organization (1 minute)

2 Check – up (5 minutes) - Some students write the new words in Unit 10

- Some students revise the use of modal verbs

3 New lesson (35 minutes)

1 Before you read - Read out the words and phrases

then check their meanings

- Work in pairs, ask and answer the questions

+ I often read books Novels, short stories, comic books,

science fiction books, craft books, thrillers and biography

books are my favourite books

+ I often taste/swallow/chew and digest books

- Pay attention to new words and phrases

Before you read

- Instructs Ss to read the words and phrases in the glossary

- Introduces some new words and phrases

2 While you read

- Listen to the tape and read the passage for the first time

Task 1

- Work individually skim the passage, finish task 1 then

compare the answer with their partners:

Task 2 - Work individually scan the passage, finish task 2

then compare the answer with their partners:

Task 3 - Work in pairs, scan the passage again ask and

answer the questions

1 There are three ways of reading …

2 We might swallow a book when it’s a good book and we

don’t have much time to enjoy it

3 We should look at the first few pages to check if it’s too

difficult

4 Television can bring you all the … stories with color,

picture and action

While you read

- Plays the tape, asks Ss to listen to the tape while reading

- Asks Ss to read out the words

- Calls some of the Ss to do task 1

- Asks some Ss to give the answer, some of them find key words and evidence from the passage, and other translate the sentences

- Asks some pairs of Ss to write down the answers and act out ask and answer

3 After you read - Find out the words in the square then fill

them in the gaps - Instructs Ss to find out the wordsAfter you read

4 Consolidation (3 minutes) - Words and phrases - Summarize the passage

5 Homework (1 minute) - Words and phrases - Translate the passage into

Vietnamese

- Summarize the passage
