The British faced 2 far bigger wars, World
War I (1914-1918) and World War II
(1939-1945) in which she was a major participant.
The wars killed a dozen of millions of people
in Europe and Britain had to suffer heavy
losses of human lives and property.

• Joseph Conrad(1857- 1924) was a
Polish-born British novelist
• His father was a novelist and traslator English and French literature
• His mother dided when he was eight years old

• After his father’s death, he lived in his uncle’s house
• He worked as a sailor and then
captain on British ship
• In 1886, he became a Bristish
subject.

In 1885 he married Lousia Hourkins After his
wife’s death, he married Jean Elizabeth
He died of a heart attack age 71 on 7 July, 1930
