The British faced 2 far bigger wars, World

War I (1914-1918) and World War II

(1939-1945) in which she was a major participant.

The wars killed a dozen of millions of people

in Europe and Britain had to suffer heavy

losses of human lives and property.

• By this time, the United States, also her former colony had become the strongest economic and military power of what was called the capitalist block, and Britain had

to accept her second porition behind the U.S.

 All of events influenced to the literature in 20th century

• The Darwin’s theory about man’s origin made the society anxious.This leg to pessimism trend in literature

• Writers shift of focus.

• The explosion in the kind and trend of the novel.

Writer’s biography

• Joseph Conrad(1857- 1924) was a

Polish-born British novelist

• His father was a novelist and traslator English and French literature

• His mother dided when he was eight years old

• After his father’s death, he lived in his uncle’s house

• He worked as a sailor and then

captain on British ship

• In 1886, he became a Bristish

subject.

• Moods of the sea and life of a seaman provided the setting for many of his novels

language which sometimes appeared in his early works,Conrad achieved great success

as an English writer with his:

 From 1876 to 1881 he studied medicine at the

University of Edinburgh While studying he also

began writing short stories

 Following his term at university he was employed

as a ship’s doctor on the SS Mayumba

 He completed his doctorate in 1885

 In 1885 he married Lousia Hourkins After his

wife’s death, he married Jean Elizabeth

 He died of a heart attack age 71 on 7 July, 1930

major initiative in the mystery novels.

• The novels of his works include science fiction so many cultutal influences from him, especially mystery novels.
