SELECTING PRODUCTS

Select two export products that you want to analyse – to familiarise yourself with the product

selection search engine

Product 2: Pepper of the genus Piper crushed or ground 6-digit HS Code: 090412

Note: Login to Trade Map On the main selection menu, click on the search box next to “Product” As you do this, a drop down

menu appears Type the name of the product in the search box As you start typing the name of the product, Trade Map searches for the word you have entered in the text describing each code You can scroll down to view them all Once you see the appropriate definition, click on it to select it If you want to delete the product you have selected, click on Remember to keep the search words you use short and simple and if you can not find a product, try to think of how else it could be described The code description does not always match the common name of the product For example, if you are looking for “raisins” the code is “080620 dried grapes” If you had entered “raisin”, Trade Map would have found

“jacks and hoists of a kind used for raising vehicles” So you would need to try again calling the raisin differently

Always be careful not to make any spelling or typing errors when entering the word!

Trang 4

Country B: 8.9% (Italy)

Country C: 0% ( United Arab Emirates )

Trang 5

Would your choice of market change in light of this information?

Yes, because the import is so much in the tariff If the tariff is too high, it is difficult for the exporter or it is not possible to profit from the increase in cost and the selling output is not high due to high import prices The goods cannot compete with domestic products However, countries with too many laws will find it very difficult to import.

III BILATERAL APPROACH

ANALYSING TRADE BETWEEN TWO COUNTRIES

16 When analysing trade between two countries Trade Map allows you to simultaneously see for each product:

(1) the actual trade between the two countries;

(2) how much the exporting country exports to the world; and

(3) how much the importing country imports from the world.

Note: These three items shown together give a rough estimate of how much the two countries could “theoretically” trade, by

putting the total demand and total export capacity in isolation For example:

If Guatemala’s imports from the world are greater than Nicaragua’s exports to the world then the potential for Guatemala to import more from Nicaragua is: Nicaragua’s exports to the world less Guatemala’s imports from Nicaragua.

If Guatemala’s imports from the world are less than Nicaragua’s exports to the world then the potential for

Guatemala to import more from Nicaragua is calculated as: Guatemala’s imports from the world less Guatemala’s imports from Nicaragua.

16.1 Assess the trade situation concerning Thailand’s exports to Australia for all products exported.

Note: Return to the Main Selection Menu, under the “Country” field, enter Australia and click on it to validate your entry.

Under “Partner”, follow the same procedure to select Thailand Make sure you have selected Exports before you submit the two countries for analysis Also make sure you have cancelled the product selection.

16.2 In the fish sector (HS-03) Is there scope for Thailand to increase exports to Australia?

Australia’s imports from Thailand: 74,163,000 USD

Australia's imports from world< Thailand's exports to world (851,222,000 USD< 1,959,992,000 USD)

The potential for Australia to import more from Thailand: 851,222,000 - 74,163,000 = 777,059,000 USD

Therefore, there is scope for Thailand to increase exports in the fish sector to Australia by 777,059,000 USD

16.3 To what other countries does Thailand export fish fillets (HS-0304)?

Note: By clicking on , you can view where the respective country is exporting or importing from.

Japan, United States of America, Saudi Arabia, Republic of Korea, Singapore, Chinese ,…

16.4 Does Thailand export more fish fillets (HS-0304) to APEC Countries than to the EU?

Note: Under the Secondary Selection Menu, select APEC (G39) under the Partner Group drop down menu Do the same for

the EU Compare the figures

Thailand’s fish fillets exports to APEC Countries: 237,246 USD

Thailand’s fish fillets exports to the EU 28: 6,067 USD

 Thailand exports more fish fillets (HS-0304) to APEC Countries than to the EU 28 (in 2018)
