Trang 1LESSON PLAN UNIT 11: SOURCES OF ENERGY
PART A: READING I.OBJECTIVES:
By the end of this lesson, students will be able to:
- develop reading skills such as understanding main ideas, scanning for specific information, guessing meaning in context and summarizing
-learn some new vocabularies related to the topic
-gain more knowledge about the advantages and disadvantages of different sources of energy
- realize the importance of sources of energy and how to use the alternative sources of energy
II.TIME: 45minutes
III TECHNIQUES: pair and group works, questions and answers, gap-fill, matching.
IV TEACHING AIDS: textbook, pictures, mini boards, markers, and chalk.

15.make use of (v): tận dụng
VI PROCEDURES:
Warm up
(4 minutes)
-Teacher divides class into 4 groups
-Teacher sets the rules: In 1 and a half minutes, name
things which use energy in their houses Try to list as many as possible 2 marks for each right item Teacher delivers each group a mini board and a marker
After 1 and a half minutes, each group will stick their answer on the board
-Teacher checks the answers of each group
-Teacher counts the marks
Suggested answer:
Computer, lights, vacuum cleaner, refrigerator, torch, air-conditioner, electric fan, electric cooker, ceiling fan, microwave oven, iron, washing machine, cell phone, cassette player,…
-Work in groups to figure out the answers
as many as possible -Give the answers
Before you
read (16
minutes)
-Teacher has ss look at 3 pictures on student’s book page
124 T asks ss some questions:
• Now look at your ss’ book on page 124 How many pictures are there in your book?
• What can you see in the pictures?
Suggested answer:
3 pictures wind mill, solar panel and hydroelectricity dam
-T asks Ss to answer 2 questions:
1 What sources of energy does each picture above refer to?
2 What do you need energy for?
-Look at the pictures
in textbooks and answer the questions
Trang 3Suggested answer:
1 wind power, solar energy, water power.
2 We need energy for many kinds of work in the life such
as cooking meal, lighting, heating or cooling the house,
running machines….
Introduce the new lesson: You have just figured out
some kinds of sources of energy and their use Now we
are going to learn more about alternative sources of
energy.
- T teaches some new words:
1.windmill (n): cối xay gió
wind power (n): năng lượng gió
2.solar panel (n): tấm pin năng lượng mặt trời
solar energy (n): năng lượng mặt trời
3 hydroelectricity dam (n): đập thủy điện
water power (n): năng lượng nước
4.nuclear energy (n): năng lượng hạt nhân
5.fossil fuel (n): nhiên liệu hóa thạch
6.alternative (adj): thay thế
7.geothermal heat (n): địa nhiệt
8.reserve (n): nguồn dự trữ
9.release (v): thải ra
10.exhausted (adj): cạn kiệt
11.available (adj): có sẵn
12.infinite (adj): = unlimited: vô tận
13.plentiful (adj): phong phú
14 potential (adj): tiềm năng
15 make use of (v): tận dụng
-T asks the whole class to repeat all the new words
Checking vocabulary: Gap – Fill(Task 1/p 125)
-T asks Ss to work in pairs and fill in each blank with a
suitable word from the vocabulary
1- Six hundred balloons were at the ceremony
2- We are looking for methods of making it
3-People use ……… to run machines, heat, and
cool their homes
4- The food in the restaurant is cheap, but the choice is
rather
5- Fuel supplies are nearly
-T has Ss work individually in 2 minutes to do the task
-T calls some Ss to answer and check
Suggested answer: 1.released 2 alternative 3.energy
4.limited 5.exhausted
-Take note -Listen and repeat
-Do the exercise -Take note
Trang 4While you
read (20
minutes)
Task 2/p 126 -T prepares a poster beforehand then hangs it on the board T also prepares the word cards
-T asks Ss to read the passage and put the word cards on the correct column
Sources of energy Advantages Disadvantages Nuclear power
Solar energy Water power Wind power
T may do an example
After 4 minutes, T calls Ss to go to the board and stick the words on the correct places
T gives feedback
Suggested answer:
Sources of energy Advantages Disadvantages
Solar energy plentiful, infinite, clean and safe only possible duringsunny days Water power without pollution expensive Wind power clean and unlimited no wind , no energy Geothermal heat available only possible in fewplaces
-Read the passage carefully
-Find the correct words and match them with the right column
-Read the passage again
-Answer the question
-Listen to the instruction
clean and unlimited
no wind, no energy
without pollution
expensive available
only possible in few places and
possible during the day time
plentiful, infinite, clean and safe unlimited dangerous
Trang 5Task 3/p.126
-T asks Ss to work in pairs and answer 2 questions on the
book and one extra question
1/ What is our major source of energy?
2/ How many sources of energy are mentioned in the
text, and which one do you think has the most potential?
3/Why must people develop and use alternative sources
of energy? (extra question)
After 5 minutes, T will divide class into 4 groups and
introduce the game “Lucky energy”
There are pictures represent kinds of energy: solar, wind,
water, and nuclear energy
Behind each picture there is one question and the points
Each team will take turn to choose one picture and
answer the question If the team can give the correct
answer, they will have chance to receive the points of
that question If they cannot give the correct answer, the
other teams will have chance to answer If they can give
the correct answer, they will get the points
There is one picture that there is no question behind it,
which called “lucky energy” The team that chooses the
lucky energy will get the points without having to answer
any question
-Work in group and play the game
Trang 6Suggested answer:
1/Our major source of energy comes from fossil fuel
2/Five sources of energy are mentioned in the text Solar energy has the most potential because it is not only plentiful and infinite but also clean and safe (Ss may give their own opinions)
3/ Because power demand is increasing very rapidly, fossil fuels will be exhausted within a relatively short time
After you
read (5
minutes)
- T asks Ss to read all the words in the box on page 126 and makes sure that Ss know the meaning of them
-T has them read the summary carefully and try to fill in each blank with a suitable word from the box
- T calls on some Ss to give the answers
- T gives correct answers Suggested answer:
1 energy 2 one 3 fuels 4 limited
5 alternative 6 sources 7 unlimited 8 environment
-Work individually -Do the task
Home work: Learn new words
Prepare for part B Speaking
one environment alternative limited
