I) Warm up : Getting started

- Show ss the pictures and the names of 6 countries

- Have ss match the names of the countries with pictures /flags

- Have ss tell their partner which country they would like to visit and why ?

Ex: S1: Which country do you want to visit ?

S2 : I’d like to visit Thailand

S1 : Why ?

S2 : Because there are many famous temples there

- Have ss listen to the dialogue between Mrs Quyen and Mrs Smith without

looking at the book.(once )

- Have ss look at the book and listen to the tape (once )

- Listen to the tape and repeat

- Have Ss practice reading the dialogue

- Show Ss the table in book (p.113)

- Have ss read the statements in the table and fill in the gaps (work in groups of

3 )

By the end of the lesson ss will be able to talk about their plans for a trip abroad and use the past progressive tense

* Grammar : The past progressive tense :

S + was/ were + V-ing + O + when + V (past)

While + S + was/were + V-ing + O , S + was /were + V-ing + O

* Techniques : Practice in pairs and group

* Teaching aids : pictures, cards, posters.

I- Pre-speaking

1) Warm up : Jumbled words

Nocaomacomdit -> accommodation ; tetki-> ticket

Cikp pu -> pick up ; preruiss -> surprise

2) Set the scene: Ask ss “ What were you doing at 9 pm yesterday?’’.

- Take some answers

- They should be different What were you doing at (give the time of your last

English class)? They should all answer: I was studying English Make sure ss

realize they should tell the truth

3) Grammar: The past progressive tense.

- Introduce form, meaning, and use of past progressive

Form: S + was/were + V-ing + O.

- Let students repeat a few times to get them used to pronouncing

- Check pronunciation of 1-was and 2-were by finger feedback If you say "was’’

Ss hold up 1 finger If you say ‘were’’ they hold up 2

- Say the words individually and in sentences Then help ss pronounce

Get ss to copy the chart in their noterbooks (you can choose any times you like )

*Form: S + was/were + V-ing + at + time.

*Use: Thì quá khứ tiếp diễn diễn tả 1 hành động đang diễn ra tại 1 thời điểm xác định trong quá khứ (dùng với giới từ "at").

*Meaning: Have ss translate the sentences into Vietnamese

- Have ss practice making sentences using the pictures

- Show Ss the picture and poster (Ex2/119 )

- Ask Ss to look at the picture then match the half sentences in column A to those

in column B

Ex: The Le family was sleeping when the mailman came

*Form: S + was/were + V-ing + when + V (past).
