E Language focus: SUPERLATIVES

 Class details : A class of 10t h graders

 Time allotted : 45 minutes

 Aim : to help Ss learn and practice structures of superlatives

 Objectives : By the end of the lesson, Ss will be able to:

- master structures of superlatives

- use superlatives to compare more than two things/2 people

accurately  Teaching aids and materials : textbook, board, colorful chalk,

poster and realia

 Anticipated problems : Some Ss may be confused with two-syllable adjectives used as short ones (friendly, simple, clever, narrow, quiet…)

- T catches Ss’ attention and asks Ss to play the game

- T crosses 12 dashes on the board:

- T gives instructions: “Here I have a word with 12 letters Ss, guess the letters

to find out the word If you guess correctly, the girl will sit here (at the beginning position) If your guess is incorrectly, the girl will fall down one step

When the girl falls down the last step, you will lose the game Remember that after guessing 4 correct letters, you can give the key word”

- T checks Ss’ understanding:

+ What are you going to do first?

(expected answer: guess the letters )

+ How many steps will the girl fall

down if you guess incorrectly? ( expected

answer: one)

+ After guessing 4 correct letters, can

you give the key word? ( expected

answer: Yes)

T asks Ss to start the game

- T shows the realia (3 clocks with different color: blue, pink and black)

+ So, among the three clocks, the black

clock is……… (expected answer:

the black one? (expected answer: Yes, it

is)

+ And is the pink clock more expensive

most expensive)

- T gets Ss’ answer

- T gives the correct answer

- T writes the marker sentence on

the board: “The pink clock is the most

expensive.”

- T reads the marker sentence and

asks Ss to repeat (chorally-3 times and

- T elicits the superlative form of

long adjectives:

+ T continues to point to the word “ most”

1 Short adjectives ending in “- e”, only

add “-st”:

2 One-syllable adjectives ending in one

vowel + one consonant, double that

consonant before adding “-est”:

3 Short adjectives ending in a consonant

+ y, change y to i before adding “-est”:

dry driest

4 Two-syllable adjectives ending in “- y”,

“-le”, “-er”, “-et”, “-ow” are considered

as short adjectives:

- T asks Ss to copy into their notebooks

- Step 1 : + T shows the first cue

+ T asks: Ss, do you know Phu Si/

Everest/Kilimanjaro mountain? (expected answer: Yes/No)

+ T says the utterance “Everest is the

highest mountain.” as a model for Ss 3

times

- Step 2 : T gets Ss to repeat the above utterance chorally 2 or 3 times

- Step 3 : T calls 2 or 3 Ss to repeat

it individually and corrects

- Step 4 : T continues to work on the second cue:

+ T asks Ss:

. What is this? (T points to picture 1)

. How about this? (T points to picture
