Writing a descriptive essay can be a rich and rewarding experience, but it can also feel abit complicated It's helpful, therefore, to keep a quick checklist of the essential questions tokeep in mind as you plan, draft, and revise your essay

Planning your descriptive essay:

•What or who do you want to describe?

•What is your reason for writing your description?

•What are the particular qualities that you want to focus on?

Drafting your descriptive essay:

•What sights, sounds, smells, tastes, and textures are important for developing your

description?

•Which details can you include to ensure that your readers gain a vivid impression imbued with your emotion or perspective?

Revising your descriptive essay:

•Have you provided enough details and descriptions to enable your readers to gain a

complete and vivid perception?

I/ Reported statements (câu tường thuật gián tiếp):

Trong câu trực tiếp thông tin đi từ người thứ nhất đến thẳng người thứ hai:

He said "I bought a new motorbike for myself yesterday"

Trong câu gián tiếp thông tin đi từ người thứ nhất qua người thứ hai đến với người thứ ba:

He said he had bought a new motorbike for himself the day before

Để biến đổi một câu tường thuật trực tiếp sang gián tiếp chúng ta cần:

1 Đổi chủ ngữ và các đại từ nhân xưng khác trong câu trực tiếp theo chủ ngữ của thành phần thứ nhất.

2 Lùi bậc động từ: chỉ xảy ra khi động từ giới thiệu (Introducing Verb) là V2

- Eg: She said: “ I am very busy.”  She said that she was very busy.

She always says:” I am very busy.”  She always says that she is very busy.

REMEMBER:

- Note: câu điều kiện loại 2 và loại 3 không biến đổi động từ trong câu gián tiếp.

She said:”If I was a bird, I would become a white dove.”

 She said that if she was a bird, she would become a white dove

3 Biến đổi các đại từ chỉ thị, phó từ chỉ thời gian và địa điểm theo qui định nếu cần thiết.

PHỤ LỤC 1: CÂU HỎI GIÁN TIẾP (QUESTION)

- Trước hết chúng ta đổi câu hỏi ra câu khẳng định:

She said to him:”Where do you go?” (“Where do you go?”  “Where you go.”)

- Sau đó chúng ta thay “said to” bằng “asked” hoặc những cách khác hay hơn.

- Cuối cùng chúng ta triển khai câu hỏi gián tiếp như câu tường thuật

She asked him where he went.

- Trong trường hợp không có từ để hỏi (W/H), ta thay bằng “if” hoặc “whether” (Lưu ý:

“if” ở trong trường hợp này không hề tương ứng “if” trong câu điều kiện.)

She said to him:”Do you still love me?”  She asked him if he still loved her.

Identify the only mistake: She asked him if he were fond of pop music.

PHỤ LỤC 2: CÂU MỆNH LỆNH (COMMAND)

- Với học sinh trung bình khá, chúng ta chỉ cần nhớ 2 mẫu sau đây:

Eg: She said to her husband:”Open the door, please.”

 She asked/ told her husband to open the door.

- Với học sinh khá giỏi trở lên, chúng ta nên học thêm các động từ khác hay dùng với câu mệnh

lệnh gián tiếp (beg – advise – get – recommend – remind …)

PHỤ LỤC 3: TƯỜNG THUẬT THEO TÌNH HUỐNG

- Với những tình huống mà người ra đề bắt buộc phải viết câu gián tiếp bằng một động từ

cụ thể cho trước, chúng ta chỉ có cách duy nhất là thuộc mẫu câu động từ (verb pattern) của động từ đó Chúng ta phải sử dụng những từ điển tốt nhất để viết đúng.

Eg: She said to her father:”I’m sorry, Daddy.”

 She apologised to her father (apologise to Sb for St)
