II The introductory

paragraph is a part of an

essay.

It has 4 purposes:

1.Introducing the topic 2.Giving a general

background.

3.Indicating the overall plan.

4.Arousing the reader’s interest

Parts in an introductory paragraph:

General statements:

+ Introduce the topic of the essay

+ Give background information on the topic

Thesis statement:

+ States the main topic

+ Lists the subdivisions of the topic

+ Indicate the method of organization

+ Is the last sentence in this paragraph
