Trang 5Vehicle security dev ices prov ide v ary ing deg re s of
protection They are intended to en ance resistance
to theft of either the contents of a v ehicle or the
v ehicle itself, b d eter ing the potential thief f om
at acking or contin ing an at ack on a v ehicle
It is ac epted that any security sy stem can be
ov er ome g iv en the a propriate ski ls, to ls and
time Howev er, considera le resistance to theft can
be prov ided b the v arious d ev ices and sy stems
av aia le on the market
The risk of theft can be reduced b taking sev eral
precautions Some precautions relate to the v icinity
in which the v ehicle is p rked and the condition in
which it is left Other relate to the security dev ices
on the v ehicle
The use of g ood security sy stems/ d ev ices can for e a
thief to use to ls that are d ificult to conceal and can
make the time ne d ed to enter the vehicle so long as
to make an inter uption lkely
1 Scope
This British Stand rd is intend ed to prov id e
information and g uid ance on the v arious ty pes of
security dev ices an sy stems that are av aia le,the
rang e of protection d ev ices and sy stems that are
av aia le, the rang e of protection they ofer, an
where a propriate the British Stand rd to which
they should conform Security aspects of how and
where the v ehicle is left are also considered
2 Informa tive ref r nces
This British Stand rd refer to other publcations
that prov id e information or g uid nce Editions of
these publcations cur ent at the time of is ue of this
stand rd are l sted on the insid e b ck cov er, but
reference should be ma e to the latest ed itions
3 Vehicle perimeter security
NOT There are se eral stag es, d ring the proces of bre king
into a v hicle, at which a thief ma b dela ed or deter ed b
a pro riate securiy systems
3.1 Tam pering with the vehicle
Ind ication of fit ed security dev ices wi often be
suficient to d eter a thief f om at empting to break
into a v ehicle Howev er, the precise ty pe of sy stem
should not be shown, because a thief ma k ow how
to defeat p rticular sy stems q uickly
Some security sy stems are fit ed with dev ices
( motion sensor , imp ct sensor , proximity sensor
etc.) that wi l detect inter erence with the v ehicle
and sou d an alarm prior to the thief intruding into
the v ehicle These sy stems ma not be suficient to
d eter the thief f om at acking the v ehicle, but ma
d eter subseq uent theft
3.2 Do r se urity
( Se BS AU 20 -1a, BS AU 20 -5 , BS AU 20 -6 ,
BS AU 20 -7 an BS AU 20 -8
1)
)
In al thefts f om closed v ehicles and in nearly al
thefts of v ehicles, it is neces ary for the thief to fir t
g ain entry Entry is usual y g ained throug h a do r,
a window or the bo t Do r with locking sy stems
conforming to BS AU 20 -1a wi prov id e a g ood
b sic lev el of security , without which more
sophisticated central and dead locking sy stems ma
not be as efectiv e Complance with BS AU 20 -1a
wi prev ent the do r locks fom being easiy for ed
or the internal ln ag es being simply activ ated to
release the latch mechanisms BS AU 20 -1a also
includ es req uirements to prev ent the wind ows f om
being for ed d own easi y
Central locking sy stems that conform to
BS AU 20 -5 also me t the req uirements of Part 1a
an ensure that al the do r lock when the
d riv er/ pas eng er do r is locked , so sig nificantly
reducing the risk of any do r being left
ina v ertently u locked
Dead locking sy stems that conform to BS AU 20 -6
also me t the req uirements of Parts 1a an 5 and
ensure that locked do r can ot be opened ev en if
the interior handles are ac es ed f om the outsid e of
the v ehicle ( e.g b breaking a window) Only a key
can be used to unlock this ty pe of do r
NOT Locking sy stems for the driv r’s an lo d comp rtment
of g oods v hicles which conform to BS AU 2 9-7 an
BS AU 2 9-8, resp ctv ly,should pro ide a g ood le el of securiy
3.3 Window se urity ( BS AU 20 -4)
NOT 1 A thief can g ain immediate aces to the contents of a
v ehicle ( at le st as far as the can re ch) b bre king a win ow
If the v hicle is not de dlocked the thief can then o en the do r
using the interior controls This wil prov ide much e sier ac es
to the contents of the v hicle an wil faciliate the theft of the
v ehicle iself
Security g lazing that conforms to BS AU 20 -4
should be fit ed to inc ease the window security of a
v ehicle sig nificantly b inc easing the time an
efort neces ary to break throug h the g las
NOT 2 Glazing which conforms to BS AU 2 9-4 is most likely
to b only a aila le as orig inal e uipment on new v hicles

In pre araton
Trang 64 Alarm on br a ch ofperimeter
security (se BS 6803)
NOT In the e ent of the p rimeter securiy of a v hicle b ing
bre ched, e.g a win ow b ing broken or a do r o ened,a
sou ding larm can b an efectv deter ent Howe er,as the
public ha e b come v ry used to false alarms, a sou ding alarm
mig ht only b efectv if the owner is wihin e rhot
To be efectiv e, alarm sy stems should sou d only
folowing an at ack on a v ehicle and should not
sufer f om false alarms, such as car alarm sy stems
conforming to BS 6 0 -2
2)
an commer ial v ehicle
alarm sy stems conforming to BS 6 0 -3 Instal ng
such alarm sy stems in complance with BS 6 0 -1
wi l ensure they are efectiv e an rel a le in use
5 Security ofin- ca r entertainment
systems ( se BS AU 209-2)
In-car entertainment sy stems represent a hig h
proportion of the contents stolen f om car
Complance with BS AU 20 -2 req uires the sy stem
to be easiy remov able ( by the v ehicle owner), or
locked in place ( by a lock conforming to
BS AU 20 -1a), or permanently instal ed, or cod ed ,
or of a modular form where the sy stem is splt up In
a d ition the sy stem should be permanently marked
with a unique v ehicle identification n mber ( VIN)
or reg istration n mber
6 Im mobi ization ( BS AU 209-10)
Since 19 2 al new car and l g ht v ans are req uired
to be fit ed with a dev ice to prev ent their
unauthoriz d use The most common d ev ice is a
ste ring column lock which is integ ral with the
ig nition/ starter control and is activ ated b the
ig nition key It is normal for the desig n of these
dev ices to be common for each mod el in a v ehicle
rang e and because of this most thiev es rea i y k ow
how to ov er ome them It is therefore a v isa le for
an ad ditional v ehicle immobi z r which conforms to
BS AU 20 -10
3)
to be fit ed, as a thief is les l kely
to be k owledg ea le a out its fu ction and
instal ation Immobi iz r fal into thre categ ories
as fol ows:
— mechanical;
— electromechanical; and
— electrical/electronic
Ty picaly , mechanical sy stems ne d to be fit ed to
the v ehicle ev ery time it is left, althoug h a fixing
point ma be per manently fit ed Electromechanical
and electrical/ electronic sy stems are, ty picaly ,
permanently fit ed to the v ehicle and ne d only to be
N T An immo ilizer that instantane usly immo ilizes the
eng ine should not b ca a le of b ing ctv ated while the v hicle
is mo ing , otherwise the safe o eraton of the v hicle could b
se erely afected
7 Aiding the r covery ofstolen
vehicles
N T The true ident y ofa stolen v hicle has to b disg uised
in order for the thief to ma imize any financial g ain fom i If a
v ehicle g iv s any in icaton of is true ident y, i wil inc e se
the chance of detecton while the thief uses i or tries to p s i on
7.1 Visible vehicle identification
Since Apri 19 0 al new car are req uired to be
marked with a u iq ue Vehicle Identification
Number ( VIN) Tra itional y the VIN was
positioned where it was not v isible f om the outside
of the v ehicle and conseq uently the pol ce were
u a le to check it Inc easing ly for new v ehicles the
VIN is being positioned where it is v isible f om the
outside but can ot be tampered with This is cal ed
“ Visible VIN” an its use wi aid the recov ery of
stolen v ehicles especialy if the thief can ot remov e
or oblterate it The VIN is the only mark that is
u ique to the v ehicle, and recog niz d b the polce
as such I the VIN is v isible it wi aid the
identification an hence recov ery of stolen v ehicles
which hav e be n a andoned and/or had their
id entity super icialy chang ed ( e.g respray , false
plates)
Vehicles which do not hav e a man facturer-a pl ed
“ Visible VIN” should hav e some other u ique
n mber etched on the g lazing , prefera ly the
reg istration n mber or VIN I this is d one in
ac ord nce with BS AU 20 -3 it wi sig nificantly
inc ease the cost ofchang ing the v ehicle’s id entity
and wi therefore act as a d eter ent to a thief
N T The VIN should only b a plied in a p si on visible fom
the outside of the v hicle wih the a pro al of the v hicle
man facturer, otherwise i ma make the acquisi on of d plicate
key s e sier for the thief
7.2 Hidden identification
A v ehicle and/or its component p rts ma be
identified b concealed marks or dev ices These are
not intend ed to be v isible to the naked ey e and ma
be rea phy sical y or electronicaly The more
components and p rts of the v ehicle that are
identifia le using such means, the harder it wi l be
for a thief to chang e the v ehicle’s identity , or sel the
component p rts
Trang 77.3 Locating devic s
These dev ices can be concealed in a v ehicle and
ena le it to be tracked and located This kind of
dev ice should sig nificantly dec ease the recov ery
time and the number of v ehicles that disa pear,
prov ided that the bod responsible for the sear h
has suficient resour es and a wid espread
inf astructure Further, if the polce are a le to
respon suficiently fast to a reported v ehicle theft,
there is a sig nificant chance of the thief being
a prehended during the theft
8 As es ing the security ofa vehicle
Ta le 1 summariz s the ty pes and d eg re s of
benefits that mig ht be ex ected to be g ained b any
p rticular item of security equipment It is only
intended as a g uid e Relativ e benefits of security
only a ply to the risk ind icated at the hea of each
column Therefore, comp risons of benefits should
only be mad e down the columns, and not ac os the
rows
Products that claim conformity with a British
Stand rd should be chosen in fav our of ones that d o
not, as the British Stand rds hav e be n drawn up to
g iv e the user some as urance with reg ard to the
minimum lev el of security prov ided and the
rel a i ity and safety of the prod uct Idealy
conformity to the relev ant British Stand ard should
be v erified b a third p rty
By refer ing to Ta le 1, the combined benefit of a
n mber of ind iv idual security d ev ices on a v ehicle
can be as es ed
