1 Scope

This Part of BS AU20 specifies the lev el of

per ormance of the sup res ion material or dev ices

used for v alances and/or whe l fla s refer ed to in

section2,3 and4 of BS AU20 -1a, and a

requirement for the dura i ity of air/ water

sep rating material or dev ices used on v alances and

whe l fla s refer ed to in section4 of BS AU20 -1a

2 Definitions

For the purposes of this Part of this

BritishStand rd, the definitions g iv en in Part1a

ofthis BritishStand rd a ply

3 General

S p res ion material and d ev ices shal comply with

clauses4,6 and7 and air/water sep rating

material and dev ices shal comply with clauses5, 6

and7

4 Suppr s ion ma teria l or devices

S p res ion material or dev ices used on v alances

and / or whe l fla s or a d ev ice used as a whe l fla

specified in section2,3 and4 of BS AU20 -1a shal

be tested in ac ord nce with Append ix A an the

calculated av erag e colection per entag e of fiv e tests

shal be not les than6 % of the quantity of water

spray ed on to the material or d ev ice

5 Air/water separating material or

devices

Air/water sep rating material or dev ices used on

v alances and whe l fla s specified in section4

ofBSAU20 -1a shal be tested in ac ord ance with

Append ix B and any g aps produced in the d ev ice b

normal or cor ected v ision

Appendix A Test for suppres ion

ma terial or devices

A.1 Principle

This test is to d etermine the eficiency of a

sup res ion material or dev ice in colecting water

spray ed on to it v ia a series of jets The test

a p ratus is intend ed to simulate the conditions

under which the material or dev ice has to fu ction

when fit ed to a v ehicle with respect to the v olume

an v elocity of water g enerated b the ty re contact

p tch

A.2 Apparatus

A.2.1 Te t a ppa r a tus, as shown in Fig ure 1

A.3 Proc dure

A.3.1 Attach either a sample 5 0 mm

wid e× 7 0mm long of the sup res ion material or

the dev ice to the v ertical f ame of the test

a p ratus, ensuring that it stand s as far b ck as

pos ible within the colection tra and any clamping

d ev ices do not afect the flow of water f om the jets

either before or after imp ct

NOT If the size of a de ice is les than 5 0 mm×7 0mm

a sample ma b fa ricated to the re uired size

A.3.2 Set the flow rate of water to

d elv er0.6 5±0.01 L/s and spra at least9 L on

the test sample f om a distance of5 0±2 mm

( se Fig ure 1)

A.3.3 Allow the water to drain f om the test sample

into the colection tra and calculate the q uantity

colected as a per entag e of the quantity spray ed

A.3.4 Car y out the test fiv e times an calculate the

av erag e per entag e of the water colected

A.4 Results

A.4.1 I the hig hest and lowest colection

considered inv ald and shal be repeated

or dev ice influences the result obtained , repeat the

procedures inA.3.1 toA.3.4 in those positions

and a ply the requirements ofA.4.1 to each of the

ind iv idual results

The mean of the indiv idual results shal then be

taken to g iv e the per entag e col ection of the

material or d ev ice
