1 Scope

This BritishStand rd specifies req uirements for

sockets and plug s of ty pe24N which wi permit

electrical con ections betwe n towing v ehicles an

traier with24V electrical equipment

NOT 1 These sockets an plug s are not inter hang ea le wih

ty e 4S (sup lementary) sockets an plug s ( se BS AU1 8)

2 General

2.1 Num ber of contacts There shal be sev en

contacts, desig nated as folows

e common return;

f left-hand rear position and end -outlne

marker l g ht, and rear reg istration-plate

i uminating d ev ice;

g left-han direction- nd icator lg ht;

h stop lg hts;

i rig ht-hand d irection- nd icator l g ht;

j rig ht-hand rear position and end-outlne

marker l g ht, and rear reg istration-plate

i uminating d ev ice;

k braking control for trai er

The rear reg istration-plate i uminating dev ice shal

be connected in such a man er that no lamp of such

a dev ice has a common con ection with both

contacts f and j

2.2 Arrang em ent of contacts The ar ang ement

of contacts shal be as shown in Fig ure 1 and

Fig ure 2

2.3 Socket The socket shal be mou ted on the rear

of the towing v ehicle in the case of a roa train It

shal be mou ted on the semi traier in the case of

an articulated road train

The socket shal be prov ided with six contact

pins (f to k) and one larg er contact pin ( e)

All contacts shal be insulated

NOT After fi ing , contact ema b con ected to the

common return of the v ehicle

Each rear terminal shal be ca a le of receiv ing two

conductor of1.5mm

marked on the inside of the socket cov er an on the

terminal face in sy mbols not les than2mm hig h

The socket shal be prov ided with a splashpro f

cov er which shal close automaticaly when the plug

is d iseng ag ed The hing ed cov er on the socket shal

be prov ided with a locking lug to retain the plug

when it is eng ag ed

All metal c p rts of the socket shal be ma e of

cor osion-resistant material or shal be protected

ag ainst cor osion

2.4 Plug The plug shal be mou ted on the trai er

in the case ofa roa train an on the towing v ehicle

in the case of an articulated roa train

The plug shal be prov id ed with six spring tubes

cor esponding to pins f to k and one larg er

spring tube cor esponding to pin e

The internal diameter of tubes f to k shal be

such that the cor espond ing pins of the socket can be

con ected with a moderate push, but they shal

ensure a g ood electrical contact

Each rear terminal shal be ca a le of receiv ing one

cond uctor of2.5mm

2.6 Disting uishing marking A d rk and

permanent colour, prefera ly black, shal be used

2.7 Dimensions for socket and plug The

d imensions for the socket and plug shal be as g iv en

in Fig ure 1 and Fig ure 2 The clearance dimensions

arou d the socket and plug as embly shal be as

shown in Fig ure 3

The location of the socket and plug as embly on the

towing v ehicle shal be as specified in BS AU19

3 Performance

The con ector shal comply with BS AU19
