Trang 50 Introduction
Vehicles operating in wet weather ma be p rked
with brakes “ on” for considera le periods The wet
conditions are conduciv e to cor osion which ma
result in a bond forming betwe n l ning and mating
sur ace
I of suficient streng th,the bond ma be intact after
brake release th s restraining the roa whe ls
1 Scope and field ofappl cation
This International Stand ard specifies a la oratory
method for conditioning brake l ning s in an
env ironment that wi l promote cor osion, an a test
method to as es the streng th of bond formed b
cor osion For comp rison of lning behav iour , it is
es ential that the material and cond ition of fer ous
mating suraces be constant and repeata le
This International Stand rd a pl es to drum brake
lning s and dis brake p ds fit ed to the brakes of
road v ehicles They ma be tested in new or used
cond ition
2 Test apparatus
The req uired a p ratus shal consist of:
2.1 for drum brakes, a means such as s rews and
torq ue wrench, b which the sho s with l ning s ma
be maintained in contact with the drum at a k own
pres ure;
2.2 for drum brake lning s, an a le, to which the
drum ma be locked and a out which a lev er which
con ects fairly with a brake sho ma rotate A
means for measuring for e a pled to the lev er is
req uired;
2.3 for dis brake p d s, a means such as dea weig ht
or clamp,for maintaining p d and dis in contact at
a k own pres ure;
2.4 for dis brake p ds, a ta le, to which a dis ma
be clamped and a measura le for e a pled fairly to
a ra ial edg e of a p d;
2.5 a h midity chamber larg e enoug h to ac ept
d rums and d is s;
2.6 water a sorbent p per, fe of clay s,
diatomace us earth, etc and containing no
chemicals that could afect rusting behav iour
3 Sampl ng a nd pr pa ration
3.1 New com ponents
3.1.1 Drum brake
Six representativ e ful siz lning s, or p rts of such
lning s ( width equal to sho width, with ma imum
of8 mm, an leng th eq ual to lning sample wid th),
two sho s an one drum are required
W hen lning s are as embled to sho s, the
as embl es shal be g rou d to a ra ius that wi l
ensure ful area contact with the d rum braking
p th
The contacting sur aces of the lning s an drum
shal be clean, f e fom dust and of cond ition an
finish that are representativ e of normal
man facturing stand ard s
3.1.2 Dis brake
Six representativ e p d s and one dis are req uired
— Pad and d is contact sur aces must be flat
— The contacting sur aces of the p ds an d is
shal be clean,fe f om dust an of condition and
finish that are representativ e of normal
man facturing stand rd s
3.2 Used com ponents
Care must be exer ised when remov ing components
f om a v ehicle to av oid d mag e or contamination
The components shal be marked before remov al so
that they ma be reas embled in the same relativ e
positions d uring test
Components ma be tested with their working
sur aces as remov ed f om the v ehicle, or the fiction
material suraces ma be lg htly rub ed with g rit
p per and the iron sur aces rub ed with g rit p per
and cleaned with petroleum-ether
4 Test procedur
In testing new components, the same procedure is to
be car ied out for the six samples
— Set the humid ity chamber controls to prov ide a
relativ e h mid ity of9 ±2 % at5 ±3°C
— Place the l ning s or p ds to be tested in the
chamber in a position that ensures ful ex osure
of the working faces for a period of4h
— Place the test d rum or d is in the same ca inet
for1/ 2h, timed so that ex osure is completed at
the same time as the fiction materials
— In the case of lning s and drums, remov e them
f om the chamber, remov e sur ace droplets of
moisture with water a sorb nt p per, and
as emble the two sho s in the d rum using the
clamping d ev ice to g iv e a projected u it pres ure
of5 0kPa Exer ise care to av oid rub ing the
sur aces when remov ing surplus moisture
— In the case of p ds and dis , after remov al of
sur ace moisture with water a sorb nt p per,
locate the p ds on the dis an hold in position
u der a pres ure of25 0kPa
— Place the as embl es in the humid ity chamber
for a further16h u der the same conditions
Trang 6— After ex osure in the ca inet, remov e the
as embles without d ismantlng and al ow to
airdry in normal ro m atmosphere( 20°C/6 %
relativ e h mid ity ) for4 h
— Place the as embles in their respectiv e test
rig s an remov e the clamping d ev ices careful y so
that the test samples are not jar ed or disturbed
— Apply a stead ily inc easing for e in the same
direction as would be per ormed b the mating
p rt of the brake, i.e.ra ialy for dis brakes and
tang ential y for drum brakes, u ti the p d sl ps
on the d is or the lning an sho sl de on the
d rum in er sur ace Record the for e at which slp
oc ur and its position a pled
5 Test report
The test report should include the folowing
p rticular :
a) siz an q ualty of lning s or p d s;
b) n mber of samples tested;
c) cond ition of f iction material ( new or used ,
natural or prep red);
d) ty pe an siz of d rum or dis ; new or used,
natural or prep red ;
e) mean v alue an rang e of torq ue or for e
req uired for al samples to sl de relativ e to the
cou ter sur aces
