In a v ariety of cir umstances it is not u k own for

automotiv e brake lning s to become contaminated

b water fom rain, or salt fom sea spray , or oi

f om a le seal fai ure or fluid f om a whe l

cy linderleak

S ch contamination could cause chang es in

mechanical streng th and or phy sical sha e of a

brake lning and thereb reduce its fu ctional

ca a i ity

1 Scope and field ofappl cation

This International Stand ard specifies a la oratory

method for ex osing samples to detrimental

env ironments,measuring the efect on streng th and

sha e an comp ring the results with those f om

u contaminated samples

It a ples to drum brake l ning s and dis brake p d s

being of org anic content and intend ed for serv ice on

road v ehicles

3 Definition

For the purpose of this International Stand rd, the

fol owing d efinition a ples:

u contaminated specimens

4 Test apparatus

The test a p ratus shal consist of:

a) container , for fluids and immer ed samples;

b) b l -end ed mic ometer, for measuring sample

thick es ;

c) a material shear test rig, as des ribed

inISO6 1 or ISO6 1

5 Sa mpl ng and pr pa ra tion

— Take at random, f om the factory output, a

minimum of fifte n representativ e lning s or p ds

of nominaly the same sha e, siz and material

— Prep re samples in ac ord nce with the

req uirements of ISO6 1 or ISO6 1 ,

whichev er a propriate for the samples

— Mark al samples with a simiar p t ern of fiv e

selected spots for measurements of thick es

— Mark each sample with a disting uishing

identity

— Measure and record the thick es to a

tolerance of0,01 mm at each spot on each sample,

taking care not to ind ent the samples

— Place the test samples at random into fiv e

g roups of thre and ke p these g roups a art

6 Test procedur

Test to be per ormed at ambient temperature, which

should be noted

In ord er to present a ma imum surace to the activ e

ag ents, the samples shal be stored in a v ertical

position during the contamination period , without

touching each other

6.1 Group I

Store the thre samples in normal ro m atmosphere

for7 d y s Measure an record thick es at each

spot immediately prior to shearing

Shear test al samples in ac ord ance with ISO6 1

or ISO6 1 an record the fig ures

6.2 Group I

Store the thre samples in a b th of water

for7d ys

Remov e f om b th and d ry sur aces with

a sorbentp per

Measure and record thick es at each spot

within10min of d ry ing and immediately prior to

shearing

Shear test al samples in ac ord ance with ISO6 1

or ISO6 1 an record the fig ures

6.3 Group I I

Immer e the thre samples in a b th containing a

solution of sod ium chloride, 10 g / l, for7d ay s

Remov e f om the b th and dry the suraces with

a sorbent p per

Measure and record thick es at each spot

within10min of d ry ing and immediately prior to

shearing

Shear test al samples in ac ord ance with ISO6 1

or ISO6 1 an record the fig ures

Immer e the thre samples in a b th of lubricating

oi, conforming to specification oi no 2 in the

Annexof ISO1817, for4 h

7 Evalua tion ofresults

— For each sample an at each stag e of thick es

— Chang e of thick es b contamination is

ex res ed as the diference in av erag e thick es

for each sample before and after contamination

The fig ures for the thre samples ma be

av erag ed to g iv e a fig ure for the product

— Chang e of shear streng th b contamination is

ex res ed as the d iference betwe n the av erag e

of the contaminated samples an that for the

u contaminated samples This ma be g iv en as a

per entag e of the av erag e v alue for

u contaminated samples
