1 Scope

This British Stand ard specifies req uirements for the

materials, finish an safe per ormance of jacks

sup l ed as orig inal equipment with p s eng er car

2 General

2.1 The jack shal be suita le for locating at the

jacking points as specified b the v ehicle

man facturer and shal be ca a le of being operated

without foulng any p rt of the v ehicle with the

do r closed

2.2 It shal not be pos ible to raise the v ehicle with

a jack that has be n incor ectly as embled f om its

component p rts

2.3 Means shal be prov id ed to prev ent ov er-trav el

of the jack

2.4 Instructions for the safe use of the jack shal be

prov ided

2.5 W rit en instructions for the use of the jack shal

be prov ided in the v ehicle man facturer’s

instruction man al, tog ether with the folowing

information

a) The v ehicle jack is only for whe l chang ing and

snow chain at achment ( if a propriate)

b) Do not place any p rt of the bod u der the

v ehicle when the v ehicle is sup orted b the jack

alone Note that it is v ery d ang erous for user to

g o u derneath a v ehicle sup orted only b the

v ehicle jack

For rep ir work where the user ne ds to g o

u d erneath, special v ehicle sup orts are to be

used

c) Use chocks when stop ed on a hi or cambered

roa Se k a v ice on the number, position and

placement of chocks f om the man facturer’s

hand o k Note that the jack is d esig ned only for

use on a g ra ient of les than8% and a camber of

les than5.5%

d ) W hen using the v ehicle jack for whe l

chang ing at the roa side:

1) use hazard lg hts;

2) a ply the hand rake;

3) place g ear in “ 1” or “ Rev er e” on man al

g ear boxes, or “P” on automatic transmis ions;

4) oc up nts should leav e the v ehicle;

5) place the jack at the placement position

a v ised b the v ehicle man facturer;

6) g iv e consideration to a v ice for jacking on

soft g rou d;

7) do not ru the eng ine when the v ehicle is

jacked up;

8) lo sen whe l n ts slg htly prior to jacking up

the v ehicle;

9) only use the sup led jack with the v ehicle

make an model marked on the jack

e) W hen whe l chang ing at the roa side:

1) clean the brake drum/mounting flang e

before fit ing a whe l;

2) s rew up the whe l n ts before lowering the

v ehicle;

3) finaly tig hten the whe l n ts, to the

man facturer’s recommend ed torque, after

lowering the v ehicle

f) Stow the jack in its stowing point or in a

cov ered container in the v ehicle

3 Ma teria ls

Streng th an other es ential phy sical properties of

the component p rts of the jack shal be ad eq uate

for use with the v ehicle with which it is sup l ed All

casting s, which shal be in ac ord ance with the

a propriate British Stand rds, shal be of u iform

q ualty , fe of blow holes, porosity , hard spots,

shrin ag e,c acks or other deleterious d efects which

mig ht a v er ely afect the intended use Proces es

such as pe ning or plug g ing shal not be used on

casting s or forg ing s for reclaiming any p rt of the

jack Lubricants, hy d raulc fluids and p ints shal

be comp tible with seal materials, where seals are

used

4 Finish

All cast, forg ed, moulded or weld ed p rts shal be

f e of sand, dirt, fins, s ale, flux an other harmful

extrane us materials All external suraces shal be

f e of bur s, fins and sharp ed g es At the d el v ery

stag e the suraces shal be protected ag ainst

cor osion, an mov ing p rts shal be lubricated as

neces ary

5 Dimensions

W hen tested in ac ord nce withAppendix B, the

jack shal hav e ad eq uate extension for use on the

v ehicle with which it is sup led

6 Operation

6.1 Operational efort

It shal be pos ible to per orm the jacking operations

d es ribed inAppendix B b a ply ing a for e that

shal not exce d the fol owing v alues:

a) 25 N for jacks operated b up and d own lev er

action;

b) 1 5N for al other ty pes of jack operation

6.2 Accidental o eration

At any point ov er its ful trav el whi e raising or

lowering the v ehicle, the jack mechanism shal not

operate independently when the operating for e is

remov ed

7 Stabi ity

W hen tested in ac ord nce withAppend ix C, the

jack shal sup ort the v ehicle without the v ehicle

coming of the jack

8 Durabi ity

W hen tested in ac ord nce withD.2 there shal be

no u due wear or permanent deformation of either

the jack or the handle an the operating for e

measured after the tenth cy cle shal d ifer fom the

fiftieth l ft b not more than±10%

9 Overloa d

W hen tested in ac ord nce withD.3 the jack shal

not col a se an the permanent d eflection shal be

not more than5% of the heig ht measured atD.3d)

The jack shal be permanently and indelbly marked

in ac ord nce with ty pe8A of BS4 81-1 an

BS4 81-2 The marking shal includ e the fol owing

information:

a) the make and model of v ehicle for which the

jack is intend ed ;

b) the number an d te of this British Stand rd,

i.e.BS AU16 a:19 0

that the operating instr uctions are to be fou d in

the v ehicle hand bo k

extension ofthe jack

B.1 Loa the v ehicle to the man facturer’s
