Trang 51 Scope
This International Stand rd specifies a method for
determining the horiz ntal burning rate of
materials used in the oc up nt comp rtment of road
v ehicles ( for ex ample, p s eng er car , lor ies/trucks,
estate car , coaches),and of tractor an machinery
for ag riculture an forestry , after ex osure to a
smal flame
This method permits testing of materials an p rts
of the v ehicle interior equipment indiv id ualy or in
combination up to a thick es of13mm It is used to
jud g e the u iformity of production lots of such
materials with respect to their burning behav iour
Because of the many d iferences betwe n the real
world situation ( ap l cation and orientation within
v ehicle interior, conditions of use, ig nition sour e,
etc.) and the precise test conditions specified in this
International Stand ard , this method cannot be
considered as suita le for ev aluation of al true
in-v ehicle burning characteristic
The fol owing stand ard contains prov isions which,
throug h reference in this text, constitute prov isions
of this International Stand ard At the time of
publcation, the edition indicated was v ald All

3 Definitions
For the purposes of this International Stand rd , the
fol owing d efinitions a ply
3.1
burning rate
q uotient of the burnt distance measured ac ording
to this International Stand rd and the time taken to
burn this distance
it is ex res ed in mi lmetres per min te
3.2
composite m aterial
material composed of sev eral lay er of simiar or
diferent materials intimately held tog ether at their
sur aces b cementing , bond ing , cla d ing , welding ,
etc
when diferent materials are con ected tog ether
intermit ently ( for ex mple, b sewing ,
hig h-f eq uency welding , riv eting ), then in order to
permit the prep ration of ind iv idual samples in
ac ord ance with clause6,such materials wi not be
consid ered as composite materials
3.3
ex osed side
side which faces towards the oc up nt comp rtment
when the material is mou ted in the v ehicle
4 Principle
A sample is held horiz ntaly in a U-sha ed holder
and is ex osed to the action of a defined low-energ y
flame for15s in a combustion chamber, the flame
acting on the fe en of the sample The test
determines if and when the flame exting uishes or
the time in which the flame p s es a measured
distance

of stainles ste l and hav ing the d imensions g iv en
inFig ure 2 The f ont of the chamber contains a
flame-resistant observ ation window, which ma
cov er the f ont and which can be constructed as an
ac es p nel
The bot om of the chamber has v ent holes, and the
top has a v ent slot al arou d The combustion
chamber is placed on four fe t,10mm high
The chamber ma hav e a hole at one end for the
introduction of the sample holder containing the
sample; in the op osite end, a hole is prov id ed for
the g as l ne Melted material is caug ht in a p n
( se Fig ure 3) which is placed on the bot om of the
chamber betwe n v ent holes without cov ering any
v ent hole area
5.2 Sa mple hold er ,consisting of two U-sha ed metal
plates or fames of cor osion-pro f material
Dimensions are g iv en inFig ure 4
The lower plate is eq uip ed with pins, the up er one
with cor esponding holes in ord er to ensure
consistent hold ing of the sample The pins also serv e
as the measuring points at the beg in ing and end of
the burning d istance
A sup ort shal be prov ided in the form of0,25mm
diameter heat-resistant wires sp n ing the f ame
at 25mm interv als ov er the bot om U-sha ed f ame

5.7 Fume cup oa r d The combustion chamber ma
be placed in a fume cup oard as embly prov ided
that the internal v olume is at least20 times, but not
more than1 0 times, g reater than the v olume of the
combustion chamber an prov ided that no sing le
heig ht, width, or leng th d imension of the fume
cup oard is g reater than2,5 times either of the
other two dimensions
Before the test, the v ertical v elocity of the air
throug h the fume cup oard shal be
measured10 mm in f ont of and behind the final
position where the combustion chamber wi be
located It shal be betwe n0,1m/s and0,3m/s in
ord er to av oid pos ible d is omfort, b combustion
products, to the operator It is pos ible to use a fume
cup oard with natural v enti ation and an
a propriate air v elocity
6 Samples
6.1 Sha e and dim ensions
The sha e an d imensions of samples are g iv en
inFig ure 6 The thick es of the sample
cor esponds to the thick es of the product to be
tested It shal not be more than13mm W hen
taking the sample permits, the sample shal hav e a
constant section ov er its entire leng th
W hen the sha e and dimensions of a product do not
permit taking a sample of the g iv en siz , the
folowing minimum dimensions shal be
maintained:
a) For samples hav ing a wid th of3mm to6 mm,
the length shal be3 6mm In this case, the
material is tested in the product width
b) For samples hav ing a wid th of6 mm
to10 mm, the leng th shal be at least13 mm
In this case the potential burning d istance
cor esponds to the leng th of the sample, the
measurement starting at the fir t measuring
point
c) Samples hav ing a wid th of les than6 mm
and shorter than3 6mm, and samples hav ing a
width of6 mm to10 mm and shorter
than13 mm, can ot be tested ac ording to this
method; neither can samples hav ing a wid th les
than3mm
6.2 Sam pl ng
At least fiv e samples shal be taken f om the
material u d er test In materials hav ing d iferent
burning rates in diferent material directions
( prelminary tests wi show this), the fiv e ( or more)
samples are to be taken an placed in the test
a p ratus so that the hig hest burning rate wi be
measured
Fig ure 5 — Exam ple ofse tion of lower U- fram e desig n for wire support faci ity
Trang 10W hen the material is sup l ed in wid ths, a leng th of
at least5 0mm shal be cut cov ering the entire
width. From this, the samples shal be taken so as to
be at least10 mm f om the material edg e and
equidistant fom each other
Samples shal be taken in the same wa fom
finished products, when the sha e of the product
permits W hen the thick es of the prod uct
is13mm or more, it shal be reduced to13mm b a
mechanical proces a pled to the side which do s
not face the oc up nt comp rtment
Composite materials ( se 3.2) shal be tested as if
they were of u iform construction
In the case of materials ma e of superimposed
lay er of d iferent composition which are not
composite materials, al the lay er of material
includ ed within a d epth of13mm f om the sur ace
facing towards the oc up nt comp rtment shal be
tested ind iv id ualy
6.3 Conditioning
The samples shal be conditioned for at least24h
but not more than7 d y s at a temperature
of23°C±2 °C and a relativ e h midity
of5 %±5% and shal be maintained u der these
cond itions unti immediately prior to testing
7.1Place samples with na ped or tufted sur aces on
a flat sur ace and comb twice ag ainst the na using
the comb ( 5.5)
7.2 Place the sample in the sample holder ( 5.2) so
that the ex osed side wi be d ownwards to the
flame
7.3 Ad just the g as flame to a heig ht of3 mm using
the mark in the chamber, the air intake of the
burner ( 5.3) being closed Before starting the fir t
test, the flame shal burn at least for1 min for
sta i ization
7.4 Push the sample hold er ( 5.2) into the
combustion chamber (5.1) so that the en of the
sample is ex osed to the flame, and after15s cut of
the g as flow
7.5 The measurement of the burning time starts at
the moment when the fo t of the flame p s es the
fir t measuring point Observ e the flame
prop g ation on the side burning faster than the
other ( up er or lower sid e)
7.6 Measurement of burning time is completed
when the flame has come to the last measuring
point or when the flame exting uishes before coming
to the last measuring point I the flame d oes not
reach the last measuring point, measure the burnt
d istance up to the point where the flame
exting uished Burnt distance is the d ecomposed
p rt of the sample, which is d estroy ed on its sur ace
or in the interior b burning
7.7 Insofar as the sample do s not ig nite or do s not
continue burning after the burner has be n
exting uished, or when the flame ex ting uishes before
reaching the fir t measuring point, so that no
burning time is measured , note in the test report
that the burning rate is0mm/ min
7.8 W hen ru ning a series of tests or repeat tests,
ensure that the combustion chamber and sample
holder hav e a ma imum temperature of3 °C
before starting the next test
