The materials used to man facture cast lg ht aloy
road whe ls shal be such that the per ormance
requirements of this stand rd are met, se Annex A
NOT The materials used should prefera ly conform to eiher
BS1 9 or BS2 7 ,howe er in order to p rmi the de elo ment
an a plicaton of alo s not inclu ed in the a o e stan ards,

Cast l g ht al oy s, whether or not included in
BS14 0 or BS29 0, shal hav e suita ly specified
chemical compositions, mechanical properties and
other phy sical req uirements which shal be d efined
and ag re d betwe n the fou der and the whe l
man facturer with p rticular at ention being g iv en
to the influence of ag e hardening and stres
cor osion
W hatev er the lg ht aloy s used in the man facture
of roa whe ls conforming to this Section of
BSAU 5 , the inspection and qualty control for cast
aluminium and cast mag nesium al oy s shal
conform to BS14 0 or BS29 0 respectiv ely ,
includ ing the a d itional inspection and test
procedures for analy sis, tog ether with optional
proced ures as ag re d betwe n the fou d er and the
whe l man facturer

5.6 Tests on completed wheels
5.6.1 Desig n a pro al
To conform to the req uirements of this Section of
this stand rd, whe ls shal fir t hav e the desig n
v ald ated b test samples, which shal demonstrate
conformity to 5.6.4 Any chang e in d etai d esign or
aloy specification shal be folowed b rev ald tion
Rev al d ation shal also fol ow any chang e in the
finishing sy stem which results in chang es in the
residual sur ace stres cond ition

5.6.2 Conform ity of pro uction
For samplng rates, se Annex C The minimum
rate of testing should be in ac ord ance with the
recommend tions g iv en in C.1
The results of the tests shal be interpreted , and
re-ex mined or retesting car ied out, in ac ord nce
with the c iteria specified in C.2
5.6.3 Preparation oftest whe ls
Tests shal be car ied out on fuly -finished whe ls
representativ e of normal prod uction except in those
cases where permanent coating s hav e be n a pled
which can ot be remov ed b simple chemical
proces es without d mag e to the whe ls, this
coating remov al being neces ary to permit
penetrant-dy e c ack detection to be car ied out In
these exceptional cases it shal be permis ible to test
uncoated whe ls, prov id ed that the whe ls hav e
und erg one the complete heat-stov ing cy cle
a plca le to the coating proces
5.6.4 Per orm anc requirem ents
5.6.4.1 G eneral
All whe ls man factured to this stand rd shal
conform to the fol owing perormance req uirements
5.6.4.2 Ty e fit ting te t

5.6.4.6 Finishing sy stems
Inboard p rts of al whe ls,the rim area cov ered b

u polshed areas, shal be protected to conform to
the req uirements of Annex H A finished whe l ( not
test p nels) shal be used for the salt spra test
specified in H.2.1
It shal be the responsibi ty of the whe l
man facturer and the retaier to include with the
sale of pol shed whe ls a warning of the efects of
cor osion on the polshed areas, an to make
recommend tions reg arding protection

Chemical analy sis certificates and/or hot metal
sup ler ’ analy sis certificates, chemical analy sis

5.9 Valve holes
The hole prov id ed in the whe l rim to ac ommod te
the ty re v alv e shal conform to the dimensions g iv en
in Fig ure 3 for clamp- n, sna - n or tube v alv es
Particular at ention shal be p id to the control of
d epth on cou terbores and d ue note taken that, in
many stand rd rim profies, the cou terbore on the
outer face ma come v ery close to “ breaking
throug h” In this ev ent, consideration should be
g iv en to inc easing the wel depth of the rim profi e
