This edition clarifies the ma imum diameter of bolts after plating , but it do s not

reflect a ful rev iew or rev ision of the stand rd, which wi be u dertaken in due

cour e The0.0 0 in plating alowance on the ma imum diameter quoted

inBS3A1 2 ( and preceding editions) is now embodied in the ma imum diameter

after plating inTa le 1, and sep rate reference to a plating al owance has be n

deleted.The ma imum diameter of bolts before plating has be n deleted and the

thick es of plating is now controled

An equiv alent rang e of bolts with u plated shanks is specified in BS3A10 Nuts

suita le for use with either rang e of shear bolts are specified inBS2A1 0

1 Scope

This British Stand rd specifies materials,

dimensions, finish and inspection requirements for

ste l shear bolts with Unified hex g ons and Unified

threa s and with close tolerance shanks, ca mium

plated, to be suita le for insertion in aluminium

aloy materials for aerosp ce use

NOT The latest re ision of an Aerosp ce Series stan ard is

in icated b a prefix n mb r

2.1 Norm ative referenc s

4 Materials and m anufacture

The bolts shal be manufactured b one of the

folowing methods:

a) machined fom brig ht drawn b r which

conform to BSS15 :19 6;

NOT S9 material ma b used u ti stocks are

e hausted

b) forg ed f om material which conforms to one of

the folowing British Stand rds:

BS S 15 :19 7

5 Mechanical properties for forg ed

bolts in the final y heat- tr ated

condition

Forg ed bolts in the finaly heat-treated condition

shal hav e the fol owing mechanical properties:

a) 0.2 per cent pro f stres : not les

than6 0MPa:

b) tensie streng th: 8 0MPa to10 0MPa;

c) elong ation on5.6 ÆS

o ( area): not les

than1 %;

d) imp ct v alue: not les than5 J

6 Anti- corrosion tr atm ent

All finished bolts shal be coated with ca mium in

ac ord nce with DEFSTAN0 -19[ 1]

7 Dim ensions

7.1 All finished bolts, after the a pl cation of the

anti cor osion coating , shal be in ac ord nce with

the dimensions and tolerances g iv en inTa le 1

andTa le 2

7.2 The clamping leng th M of the bolts shal be in

ac ord nce with the dimensions and tolerances

inTa le 2 and shal be such that, when a stand rd

n t without cou ter in or a ring g aug e without

cou ter in has be n s rewed on as far as pos ible

b hand, its lea ing face is within the distance M

fom the u der ide of the bolt hea The ru out of

the threa shal not exce d twice the pitch

7.3 The nominal leng th of the bolt shal be the

minimum bearing leng th L, which is determined b

the minimum clamping leng th Mles two threa

pitches

clas of fit specified in the latest edition of BSA10
