4 A pparatus

4.1 Dial gaug e, of the deadweight type, desig ned to r eg is e the ve tical dis anc betwe n the bearing

surfac sof a pr es e fo t an r efer enc plate, an eq ipped with a dial g rad ated to g ive a direct r eadout

of the thick es to the neares 0,01 mm The gaug e shal be calbrated in such a wa y as to pe mit at leas

one of the pr es ures spe ified in 4.2 to be o tained using at leas one of the pr es e fo t iz s

4.2 Circular pr es ure foot, with a smo th, flat surfac and a diamete of not les than 9 mm, ca a le

of a plying one or mor e of the folowing pr es ures:

a) 2k a ±0,2 k a;

b) 5k a ±0,5 k a;

c) 1 k a ± 1,0 k a;

d) 24 k a ± 2,4 kPa

NOTE 1 In case of the pres ure fo t of 1 mm diamet er, the for e is calculat ed from the pres ure for e ch

a) 0,1 7 N± 0,0 6 N

b) 0,3 3 N± 0,0 9N

NOTE 2 T e actual pres ure ex erted by the pres er fo t can b calculat ed in one of the fol owing ways:

a) by determining

1) the for e ex erted by the pres er fo t as embly, using a calibrated cou t erb lance, an

2) the surface are of the pres er fo t by direct me surement,

or

b) by using a tension dial g ug

4.3 Refer enc e plate (anvil , ha ving a plane up e surfac of diamete not les than, preferably 50 mm

g r eate than that of the pr es e fo t (4.2)

4.4 Me ns for moving the pres ure fo t, in a dir ection normal to the up e surfac of the r efer enc

plate so that it bearing surfac is maintained p ralel to the up e surfac of the r eferenc plate

NOTE T e paralelism of the pres er fo t an an il surfaces when brought tog ether can conveniently b

checked by inserting a fe ler g ug e (one only, not several tog ether) at points rou d the edg of the pres er fo t

while it is resting fre ly on the an il

6 Proc edure

R ecord the atmosphe ic t empe atur an the h midity at the time of the measur ment

Befor each det ermination, clean the surfac s of the pr s e fo t an anvi an adjus the dial ga ug e t o

r gist er z ro w hen the anvi an pr s e fo t ar in contact Make at leas five thick es measur ment ,

evenly sp c d ac os the usa le width of the fa ric ex clu ing 5 mm from the edg e of the fa ric, as

folows

Plac the fa ric on the anvi , ensuring that the fa ric is smo th, without any ac idental c eases or

wrin les an without any t ension If the e ar int entional c eases in the fa ric, no att empt shal be

made t o smo th them out befor making measur ment L we the pr s e fo t g ently on t o the fa ric

an alow it t o r s on the fa ric u ti the g ug e r ading is s a le If it takes mor than 3 s, r cord the

If the fa ric has an emb s ed surfac , do not avoid the ar as of emb s ing

7 Ex pres ion of r esults

Calculat e the arithmetic mean, in mi imetr s, of al det erminations Take this mean as the thicknes of

the co t ed fa ric

8 Test r eport

The t es r p rt hal inclu e the fol owing information:

a) a r fe enc t o this p rt of ISO 2 8 , i.e ISO 2 86-3;

b) theatmosphe ic t empe atur an h midity at the time ofthe measur men

c) a complet e desc iption of the co t ed fa ric;

d) themean, minimum an ma imum thick es es, in mi imetr s, of the co t ed fa ric, the pr s ur at

w hich the measur ment we e made, the diamet er of the pr s e fo t used an the length of time

thepr s e fo t was alowed t o r s on the fa ric;

e) thepe iod of time w hen the t es pie e is pr s ed for mor than 3 s;

f) detai s of any deviations from the proc d r spe ified;
