3 Determination of total mas per unit ar ea

3.1 A pparatus

3.1.1 Balanc e, ca a le of r eading to 1 mg or les

3.1.2 Me ns of maintaining an atmospher e w ith a relative h midity not g reate than 1 % an a

temper atur e of 6 °C ± 5°C

NOTE Air at 2 °C an 65 % relative h midity, when he ted at constant pres ure to 65 °C ± 5 °C, wil have a

relative h midity of ap ro imately 5 % Higher temperatures can le d to chang es in some co tings

3.2 Preparation of test piec es

Using the cutt er (3.1.3) cut five t es pie es from the sample, from positions sp c d r asona ly evenly

an close t o the diag onal ac os the usa le width of the sample ex clu ing 5 mm from the edg e of the

sample so that the ful width of the co t ed fa ric is r pr sent ed

Do not take any t es pie es within 1 m of a prod ction-man factur d rol end

3.3 Proc edure

Unles othe wise a r ed betwe n the int er st ed parties t o skip the drying proc s , dry the t es pie es

t o cons ant mas in an atmosphe e with a r lative h midity not highe than 1 % at a t empe atur of

6 °C±5 °C

Con ition the t es pie es in ac ordanc with the method of con itioning “1” in ISO 2 3 :1 8 an ,

without r mo ing them from the con itioning atmosphe e, det ermine the mas of each t o the near s

5 mg an the surfac ar a of each t o within 1 %

NOTE An estimate of the mas per u it are of the co t ed fa ric derived from the t otal net mas of the rol

an its k own length an width may b inac urate b cause a complete rol of co ted fa ric can ot normaly b

4 Determination of mas per unit ar ea ofsubstrate

CAUTION — Some of the solvents used may be toxic, flammable or otherwise hazardo s Care in

the han lng of such materials must be exer ised The inhalatio of vapo r sho ld be av ided

Suitable protective clothing, including glo es and g og les, sh uld be worn w hen appro riate It

is recommended that a suitable eyewash be kept in a position co venient for use Any furthe

precautio ary me sures recommended by the solvent manufacture sho ld be folowed

4.2 Principle

The co ting is r mo ed with a s rip ing ag ent from the same t es pie es as wer used for the

det ermination of the t otal mas pe u it ar a The s rip ed t es pie es ar dried, con itioned an

weighed The proc d r is r peat ed u ti cons ant mas is r ached

4.3 Reag ent

4.3.1 Suitable sol vent system (str ipping ag ent), which has no solvent or chemical action on the

subs r ate Particular car e shal be taken if ther e are b nding ag ents or finishing tr eatments on the

subs r ate which are not es entialy p rt of the co ting but which might be r emo ed w ith it [e.g bon ing

ag ent in nonwo en (b n ed-fibre) fa rics, r ot-pr oofing ag ent , etc.] Ifit is k own or suspe ted that

such an ag ent has u a voida ly be n r emo ed with the co ting , this shal be r ep rted in the tes r eport

NOTE A suita le solvent system can b an org nic solvent, a mixture of org nic solvents, wat er or an aq e us

4.4 A pparatus

4.5 Proc edure

with the tes pie es If the s ripping ag ent used is it elf a solution containing non-v lati e comp nent ,

wash the tes pie es sever al times in a suitable pur e solvent

4.5.2 Dry the tes pie es for at leas 1 h at 6 °C ± 5 °C, alow to stabi z b co l ng in a desic ator

for 1 min, and dete mine the mas of each to the near es 5 mg Extract the s rip ed tes pie es with a

furthe q antity of s rip ing ag ent , wash if ne es ary, then dry, s a i z and dete mine their mas as

befor e If the se on dete mination dife s fr om the firs b mor e than 1 %, repeat the tr eatment u ti

5.1 Proc edure

Calculat e the co ting mas pe u it ar a b subtracting the r sult o tained for the subs rat e mas pe

unit ar a in Clause 4 from the r sult o tained for the t otal mas pe u it ar a in Clause 3

tetrah drofuran used is evaporated to dry es , unles the precaution is taken of making sure
