I PHÁT ÂM

1 Quy tắc phát âm đuôi -ed:

-/id/ với những từ có âm cuối là / t, d /

- /t/ với những từ có âm cuối là /p, f, k, s, ∫, t∫, θ /

- /d/ với những trường hợp còn lại

Một số trường hợp đặc biệt không có âm cuối là / t, d / nhưng khi thêm -ed được phát

âm là/id/

hatred (sự căm ghét) beloved (được yêu

quý)

unmatched (không

gì sánh bằng) rugged (lởm chởm) wretched (tả tơi) wicked (nham hiểm) crooked (luồn cúi) ragged (rách nát)

2 Quy tắc phát âm đuôi -s

-/iz/ với những từ có âm cuối là / s, z, ∫, t∫, d /

-/s/ với những từ có âm cuối là / p, t, k, f, θ /

-/z/ với những trường hợp còn lại

II TRỌNG ÂM

1 Một số quy tắc cơ bản:

- Danh từ và tính từ thường có trọng âm ở ÂM TIẾT ĐẦU TIÊN

- Danh từ ghép thường có trọng âm ở ÂM TIẾT ĐẦU TIÊN

- Động từ thường có trọng âm ở ÂM TIẾT THỨ HAI

- Động từ ghép trọng âm rơi vào ÂM TIẾT THỨ HAI

- Đa số các tiền tố không ảnh hưởng đến trọng âm: un-, in-, im-, ir-, dis-, re-, pre-, post-, non-,

over Đa số các hậu tố không ảnh hưởng đến trọng âm: overful, overless, overable, overal, overous, overly, overer/or, over -ing, -ise/ize

2 Các đuôi trọng âm rơi vào âm tiết trước nó: -tion, -sion, -ic/ical, -ity, -ial, -ual, -itive,

logy, graphy, etry, eous, ious, ety, ance, ience, ient, iency, ian, ium, nomy, -meter, -ury, -ory, -ute

VD: con’dition, tech’nician, ‘memory,…

3 Các đuôi trọng âm rơi vào chính nó: ade, oo, ique, mentary, ee/eer, ese, ette,

-esque, -aire, -self, -ain (v), -dict (v), -pel (v), -fer (v), -test (v), -rupt (v), -press (v), -tract (v), -sist (v), -mit (v), -ect (v), -vert (v)

VD: bam’boo, cigra’retee,…

4 Các đuôi có trọng âm rơi vàoâm tiết thứ 3 từ cuối lên: -ate, -ite, -tude, -ative, -ary
